When a windows 8.1 update shows failed does it try and install it again ever or not?

I have a few updates that said failed. Does it ever try to reinstall these updates or is there a way I can do it manually?

In this case I usually will check again for updates and try them one by one from windows update. If not then download each one manually and try to install it.

Updates fail for various reasons. Some updates fail because they are not needed, some updates are interrupted by other updates.

When you reboot your computer, tell it to check for updates again. If it fails the second time, look up the reason code online and you will probably find a way to work around it.

I have had it happen in a batch. After two trys I manually loaded them one at a time and it worked.

It's very rare that I have an update fail, and usually a failed update works on the second try.

There was one earlier this year that failed to install repeatedly. It took some searching on many different fora to find the answer. It turns out that this particular update would fail to install if Windows was not booted with its own bootloader. I dual boot my main PC with Linux (on separate drives), and I was using grub to choose which OS to boot from. It's much less annoying than mashing F12 to enter the MB's boot drive menu. As soon as I booted directly from the Windows drive, the update installed perfectly.

Silly MS. Why should it matter which bootloader I'm using? It's a good thing that the two OS installs are on separate disks. If they were on the same disk, I would have had to restore the Windows bootloader to the MBR, install the update, and then reinstall grub so that I could boot Linux again. All for one Windows update.

It happens to me on all machines every now and then and once the other updates are complete it usually goes away.

How do you retry manually? I have five updates that have failed and checked to see if they later showed up as successful and they didn't-this was a few updates back. Did they not retry to install these updates? If they did they are not showing up.

Some updates replace older updates, so you may want to Google the failed updates, or post them here, if you are worried about it.

But rule on thumb is "if it ain't still there, you are good."
