I am buying my first new car soon, I'm wondering when is the best time to buy a car and what models should I be looking at? Should I purchase a 07 model now or wait for the 08 models?

I'm looking at models from Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.. either 2 dr coupe or 4dr sedan. automatic.

I really don't know much about cars but I'm just looking for something reliable, stylish, and good performance for the money.

thanks

Toyota Camry? You might be able to get a V6 Camry for about $18,000 used. The 2007 models are pretty swank.

If you want new, go with Honda = Best cars in the world

The new Civic SI is just an awesome car. That is if you are a young guy with no family to carry around.

Family: Look for a base camry.

Even if you finance the rest, $6000 or so, it won't be that bad!

You'd be stupid (or rich) to buy a brand new model, considering depreciation and such. It would be much wiser for you to pick a used car for that price, as you'll get much more value for your money.

most times i would agree.

but when talking of honda it is worth it to buy new. not because they are "best cars in teh world!" (bhahha) but because people go retarded when buying used ones.

the cost of a used 5 yr old honda anda new one is slight. might as well spend the extra $4k and get a new one.

thats true. Friend was buying a car recently (his son crashed a car, needed a replacement), used honda accord with 217 000 miles cost more than a 2003 Mitsubishi Mirage (not sure of of model, a mid size sedan) with 100k miles.

He got the Mitsubishi for 6k (give or take 1 grand, don't remember) and it drives just fine!

Probably a Mazda 3.

July and August are supposed to be the best times to buy. Near the end of the month. I think dealers get incentives to move out the 2007's for the 2008 models around then....plus Summer might be a slow time for car sales.

I bought my car new in 1995 and it's still running well. It's nice knowing the entire history of my car and that it's been well taken car of.

If no one bought new then no one would buy used.

If you can afford it new, but it new.

We are not talking about a $30k or $40k car.

Owning a brand new car is an awesome feeling if you can afford it.

Go for a $20k civic or $22 camry. You'll feel confident when you travel, and you won't have to worry about repairs for @ least 3 years.

And do buy the extended warranty if it is $1k or so. It is worth in most cases since it includes free towing, road assistance and the like.

When I got mine, I got a 7 year warranty for $1k which I used until the very last day!

2dr coupe = scion tc... best value for the money in that price range.

note, the tc has the camry engine in it, just retuned.

Wait... you recommend getting an extended warranty? Didn't you just say it was the best car in the world?

After test driving a number of cars in that price range for my little sister, I'd definitely go for the Mazda 3 if you want 4 doors/hatch or the Scion tC if you want a 2 door car. Both were fun to drive and in your price range.

I generally think buying used is a good financial decision, but often times cars from Toyota, Honda, and Mazda in that price range do not lose value very quickly and you will save very little going used. Getting a new car that you are fully aware of how it has been taken care of since day one is a better deal (for that price range and manuf).

I bought a car last October and my budget was 17K. I went through the same predicament...buy an lightly used car or buy a new low cost car. I ultimately went with a 06 Honda Civic Sedan EX. The vehicle had 11,000 miles on it so it had quite abit of warranty left. I am sure you could find something similar. I would recommend a 06-07 Civic or an 07 Camry. You will get the highest resale of it down the road and the reliability can not be beat. Feel free to PM me with any additional questions.

Replying to people like you is a waste of time, however, one must. Best could mean that is has the least problems, not that it will never fail.

Extended warranty for $1000 is great because the road assistance, + in case of failure, the warranty is there, and your car will be fixed @ the dealer with original parts.

It all comes down to the money that's available for the purchase!

This is a big purchase and not something you should take lightly.

Before asking a bunch of know it all AT'ers, make up a short list of 5 models and test drive them all.

Then grab the vaseline.
