Cryptocurrency altcoin mining profitability is starting to drop - so prices of AMD cards might start to drop before Maxwell hits. If high end Maxwell is as power efficient and decent at mining as the 750 Ti suggests - then the two scenarios are that the price gouging shifts from AMD to NVIDIA cards or both brands will sell for a bit of a premium above MSRP - IMHO the likelihood of money printing products sitting readily available on store shelves with any sort of discount is unlikely - that's why you're seeing the shortages with AMD products now.

I doubt that prices will drop below MSRP before big chip Maxwell... However, prices dropping down back to MSRP is a possibility.

Yeah - sorry I wasn't more specific. I mean prices might start to drop from what they're being sold at, not what they're supposed to be selling at I don't even know if they'll be at MSRP, but if they were even close.. not $100+ above MSRP, that would be nice

The 290/x are starting to come down.

Tiger direct has the Asus DCII 290x for 599 and newegg has been showing non reference 290's for <500.

280x and 270/x are still wayyyyy overpriced.

The sapphires with the good coolers are so overpriced it hurts.

Yep the Tri X 290/x OC are, but they offer nearly the best air cooling available and by some accounts the best. The Powercolor PCS+ 290/x are also outstanding and don't suffer the markup wars as bad.

Newegg's prices on the AMD cards are starting to come back to earth. Some (not all) R9 270 cards are under $200, with the cheapest being $185. R9 280X is now down to as low as $340 for items currently in stock (admittedly that's an XFX, not a well-regarded brand). The Club3D R9 280X is actually listed at MSRP ($300), but it's out of stock.

As for the OP's question, we're likely to see some drops around summer as purchases increase generally in the beginning of school/work year.

But the major price drops, yeah, likely until after Maxwell fully launches.

There are rumors of ASUS preparing a dual R9-290 card á la 7990.
And you'll get the custom 290X overclock cards in April/May.

I just hope we'll get the 20 nm cards in Q3 and not in Q4 or even Q1 2015 as some suggest.

The average price of the 7 R9 290s that I own was $371 of which 6 are under water :whiste:

Speaking of MSRP, Newegg currently has the MSI R9 290 GAMING at the MSRP price of $469.99 and it is in stock :hmm:

Actually 280X's came down to $330-350 on newegg today which was a huge surprise to me considering there were only 2 listed for $399 the last week or so.

270X's are also ~$200 now on newegg

Talk about a huge overnight change... Literally... prices went from 130-150% MSRP down to near MSRP levels on almost all AMD cards overnight.

Normally you'd describe a price drop with convenient terms like "discount" "sale" "after-rebate," but I don't think any of those can apply to this price change.

Is there any easy/short word/term to describe a price change for returning to MSRP after price gouging? These cards are now at "gougeless" prices?

The MSI R9 290 Gaming card linked above would be a good choice. The XFX DD is also a decent alternative but is currently priced much higher.

Asian vodoo... It was probably first sold by newegg, sold out within a few hours, and now the only available stock is the one from Asia.

I've seen a similar deal occur with my Cooler Master HAF 912 case... Ordered from newegg for $60, several weeks later it ships from Asia and the price is $100+

The MSI Gaming 290 is in stock for $470 which is probably MSRP or near. That's probably the card to buy anyway.
