When can we expect AMD 290 supply situation to improve?

its over 3 months from release and I still only see it either 50+% overpriced or out of stock.

Its crazy.

I hope that those coin miners lose their shirt in some crash....

Im usually wrong about stuff like this, so note that.

I think in 1-2 months.

There is always hope that the demand situation would also improve, such as if ASIC chips are released en masse that outperform AMD video cards in mining, and so crypto coin miners would no longer want to invest in new AMD video cards, bringing down the demand and allowing prices to return to normal on existing supplies.

Consider yourself lucky that you live in the EU, 290's are cheaper than the Nvidia counterpart over there, in NA the 290's are stupidly expensive that it's giving Nvidia a 1up on AMD when it comes to gaming (miners don't count).

You aren't kidding. A single 290 non-X on Newegg is $699! You can buy 770SLI for that, which completely obliterates a 290 in gaming (quieter to boot, from firsthand experience). It's such an idiotic situation.

While some local shops have them, cheapest is around 20% over MSRP.

I am considering waiting for highend build on 20nm tech. I can live with 6950.

MSRP+VAT and then 20% above that?

You can always order from around the EU.

AMD's new 28nm orders did not hit TSMC until Q1, but the effects of that new supply should be seen soon, I would think.

Where did you get that info? I haven't seen anything about it. Has AMD increased allocations?

They cut their orders in Q4 (below), but I saw something later from TSMC that was a little more specific on the increase, I will find it.

TSMC (TSM) has seen its 28nm utilization rate fall to 65%-70% due to a cutback of customer orders, reports DigiTimes. According to industry sources, Qualcomm (QCOM) and AMD (AMD) have both cut their 28nm chip orders to the TSMC, but the rate is expected to start climbing in 1Q14, paving the way for the foundry to report brisk sales in for the next few quarters.

I've seen the supplies get a BIT better here in Edmonton, Canada recently but prices are still somewhat high.

Supposedly it is components, not demand:

AMD Radeon R9 Graphics Cards in Short Supply, and Not Because of Demand

Sure, the cards sell well enough, but the real issue is the shortage of components, according to SweClockers.

Major GPU manufacturers don't have enough ASICs (application-specific integrated circuit) and other components for the videoboards.

VisionTek has even confirmed the problem in a recent post on Facebook.

I've always been suspicious about how some people here justified the heavily inflated prices (way way beyond MSRP on 290X, 290, and 280X) as being due to mining. The % of people who purchase new GPU's for mining is likely to be absolutely miniscule compared to the % of people who purchase new GPU's for gaming. That said, from a marketing standpoint, AMD was able to get favorable reviews by setting a relatively low MSRP at launch, but that MSRP means nothing if no one does anything to enforce it. Hopefully reviewers will pay more attention to real-world pricing trends moving forward.

I'd venture to say they are short on supply due to massive demand and not that short supply is causing demand to appear high.

We'd need sales numbers to know, but hash rates indicate supply is strong and the prices being obtained for AMD cards vs nvidia counterparts indicate extremely high demand regardless of whether it's going to gaming systems or mining systems.

Could also be price manipulation by vendors, particularly in NA.

I doubt that. It's not like you see people in the USA bending over backwards over the last two months to buy 290's that are 20-30% above MSRP to use for gaming purposes, since NVIDIA cards arguably offer a better value for gaming at those inflated price points.

As the article and the AIB vendor comments indicate, it is much more likely that supply is extremely limited.

Seems like you would be incorrect. The GPU supply chain doesn't appear to be able to instantly ramp up production.

Yes but when a small percentage buys 10 or 50 cards each to mine with, they are much more significant.

It most definitely is due to mining. I'd venture to say 80% of cards purchased (280x mostly) were due to miners. The evidence is everywhere, this isn't a small craze, there are millions of people mining as we speak.

Clearly mining is not the only issue here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36061946&postcount=14 . And no, there is no evidence about exactly how many of these 290X/290 cards have been sold in the first place (these being the two cards that have the most inflated real world pricing in the USA). Even if 80% (which is a made up number to begin with) of the people who buy these cards buy them for mining, that doesn't tell you how much total supply there was to begin with.

Edit: I take that back, it looks like 280X cards also have equally ridiculous inflated real world prices right now at Newegg. One can get GTX 780 ACX edition for less than R9 280X at Newegg!

The current r9 290 prices make the price of my EVGA GTX780 Classified ($539 after rebate) look like chump change!

It seems some forget that not only was Hawaii delayed twice, but enough supply for custom coolers took ~3 months from launch.

Orders were cut in Q4, and you can't wave a magic wand to have your supply chain instantly create more components.
