The simple answer to your lack of a performance increase is, you arent doing CPU intensive tasks to show off the speed increase.

I agree with you. It seems the forums are populated with either Conroe threads or Windows Vista threads..

Same thing happened with the X2's, and then the Opterons after that. It may be annoying, but it's understandable, since that's what's on people's minds. Truth is, these Conroe chips are looking to be huge, so it's natural that people will talk.

Except on those, it was after they were released, and available for sale, and people had them and were OC'ing them, and there were 20 reviews by every site out there. With Conroe We still have no product, no price other than a promise, and no reviews not somewhat stiffled by NDA's, and only a handful of ES chip OC's to look at.

This is the biggest vaporware hype I have ever seen. In a month or two, I could understand.....

Yet all the reverse hyperthreaded K8L 4x4 threads don't seem to bother you.

I guess no one told you. Only Intel stuff can be "vaporware hype" on here.

I have an OC'ed Opteron 165 and i don't feel any reason to spend $500 to jump ship for Conroe. The marginal performance improvements are simply not worth it.

Unless you have money to throw away, Opteron and X2 users should be jumping ship at all.

When I can double my performance for less than $500.
Since we're talking new video, memory, CPU and motherboard... looks like I'm gonna have to be paid to switch.

You apparently don't know much.

The majority of people here buy whatever is best bang for buck, which for the last few years has been AMD in most cases.
It may actually stay that way for the lower high end, but for the higher end, it looks like C2D will dominate.

Holy hell, did something in the thread actually make sense?

I'm happy with my Rig and hope to skip both Conroe and AM2 and will pick up whatever comes out after that.

As someone who doesn't need the ZOMG fastest CPU for my computer, I will probably grab whatever is the best value in the 100-150 range which looks like it will end up being AMD.

all of the intelligent ones will jump ship. who would buy a sub-par product just because of the name.

QFT...P4c....A64 was way ahead of it and the X2 has been clear winner up to this point...

I've been an AMD fan since 400 Mhz cpu but facts are facts and numbers are numbers...

Do you want me to go out there and say I have a rig faster than an FX62... your damm right I do. It's not only the cpu it's also the chipset that's very impressive.

I first had my eye on a Pentium D 940, which was at a nice price ($225), and of course, drooled over the the 950's, 955's, and 965's (didn't want to spend that much), and didn't even let the FX-60/62's come into my mind, since I knew it was far from possible with my budget, and I'd likely start crying. However... The Intel Core 2 Duo/Conroe comes into the picture, and it's $500 E6700 model is competing closely (and sometimes beating) the FX-62? WHOA! $1200 vs. $500, a lower power consumption, and actual possibility of getting something the same if not better than what I was only dreaming of, within (a somewhat stretched, though possible) budget.

Actaully the E6600 is faster than the FX-62 in many benchmarks by as much as 20%! So, the E6700 should do better. I, for one, would get an E6600. The difference is not worth the $200 price increase, IMHO.

I will be doing the opposite, I am going to build my 1st ever AMD based comp after the price drop. Most likely will be going with the Asus A8R32 MVP Deluxe and an AMD 4200+ or higher depending on price, along with the X1900XT I already have ready.

There may be a lot of "fanboys" here, but there are just as many educated users here who rely on sites such as Anandtech to discover which products are best for their money - brand name aside.

You wouldn?t be hard pressed to find many users who frequently ?jump ship.? Personally, I went from Pentium II to Pentium III, to Athlon XP, to Pentium 4 (Northwood), to Athlon 64, and most currently my Opteron 165.

Each upgrade was the best for my money (except the first two, when I didn?t really know what I was doing).

And unless all of the wildest rumors are true about anti/reverse HT and AM2 I most certainly would be inclined to ?jump ship? to Core 2 Duo (or possibly get both)

I?m a fanboy of performance, brand name means little to me as long as they?re doing things right.

I've been a diehard AMD fan for several years. I'll be honest, I'm going to buy a Conroe setup, that's a guarantee. I promise you that I will have an Intel and an AMD setup. I don't care, I am not biased. I go with what is awesome and performing well.

I will actually have (2) AMD setups (both dual dual opterons), (1) Intel desktop (conroe), and (1) Intel Dothan laptop....

Anyone calling me a fanboy is either an idiot (aka Felix), or just plain clueless (aka Felix)...

I'm a fan of both, I've had a mix of both AMD and Intel over the years, usually just what was the best going at the time. I don't think it is a case of "jumping ship" just going for whoever had the best components.

Being a fanboy is stupid when it comes to procs. Either one or the other is going to be best at any one time. Being a devoted fanboy of the losing one is, like being a blind follower of one of those evangellical churches.

AMD has had the supperior chips for quite sometime, looking around though these prelim benches show that with these Core 2's Intels got something right.

I'll be picking one up just as soon as the chips and mobo's get to a decent price here in NZ. E6600 currently go for $640NZD, about $400 US.

My next build will either be a low end Conroe or a low end AM2. The goal will be low power consumption for a HTPC/Server type rig, as such i'm waiting for some all up reviews of conroe and how it performs in bang per watt.

My 4400X2 @ 2.5Ghz is fast enough, no need to upgrade yet.

I wouldn't consider myself an AMD fanboy although most of my builds and recommendations have been AMD systems. I prefer the more efficient, high performing and cooler running cpu - which the Athlons are superior and even a little cheaper. But theupcoming conroe trumps AMD in those aspects so I'll go for it until something better comes along.

To clarify why I won't jump ship:

I will continue to support AMD for bringing the Core 2 Duo to market.

Then you should support Intel for bringing AMD's price cuts.. among other responses they're going to make because of Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest.
