For every $10, I shuck out $2.... For the money, I make sure I ask for refills if I need them and am respectful... I try to clean up the table and often sort the dishes being bussed when we're in a group so they're easier for the server to carry.

If you ever go to a restaurant with toddlers/infants....they can make a huge mess. They get paid to clean up, but it's still nice to compensate them for dealing with your kid's mess. It's half the reason some people go out to begin with....they're too lazy to clean up at home. In those cases, I'll sometimes go upward of 25-30%. In a decently priced family-restaurant, that's not that much money....

The person getting the tip is likely not the bus boy (depends on the restaurant). The bus boy is the one that deals with your little shit kid mess, not the waiter.

Most restaurants the bus staff gets a cut.

Insulting the guy's kid was uncalled for and as he stated he sorts his own table out anyway.

Guess you are what you eat, dick.

Tipping on a certain percentage is just stupid. I tip based on how they did solely. Not on the amount of the check. I have left $5 for a $60 meal, and $20 for a $20 meal. Just depends on how the server did. Normally I tip pretty well, I understand it's most of their wage.

And yes most of Europe is different. It took me a while to get used to not tipping, or only tipping 2 Euro for a meal while out at dinner in Italy. 5 months later, still feels wrong not leaving but a small tip.

Tipping on percentage is entirely the smart way to do it.

The trend is generally the higher the food costs, the higher the level of service.

One can expect their own waiter or waiters when you are dropping $300-500 for a meal for two….one can expect to share a waiter with 10+ tables all believing they are at the Ritz Carlton and want that waiter dedicated to them for $30-40 for a meal for two.

I do belive in minimum tips…usually $3-5 for a lunch by myself.

Also most don't understand you don't tip on the alcohol costs.

The system works out quite well.

Most are arguing it at the mid-priced restaurant costs anyway…debating why should they tip higher for 4 meals at a Fridays or just because they wanted two appetizers on top of the meal…the more plates, the more service.

10%, 15% if I'm feeling generous.

You did an excellent job bringing me my water, my plate of food, and my check ma'am/sir. Here's a 10'er for walking back and forth three times .

Screw tipping.

my parents do this weird asian thing that i'm not exact fond of but its their thing. No matter what they tip $1-2, for a 4 people meal at a chinese restaurant. I asked around and i guess its normal for people in that generation.

My $25-30 meals for two people normally tips $2-3. Mainly because all the server needs to do is bring me the plate i ordered and refill the water. Often times if i go often enough i just ask for a pitcher of water and they dont see/hear me till its time for the bill.

My friends are in the serving biz or former servers, when we go they tip a little more on the heavy side. Dont mind with me. I was once a waiter and i was happy to get $1-2 on a $15-25 tab, given this was about 10-12 years ago.

I am pro-tipping. I would nevr want to have a job as a waiter, and I sympathize with those people. I tip 20% by default.

Oh and I can't do math, so I have a tip calculator app on my phone. :awe:

Huh?

Bad service 10%
Average: 15%
Superior: 20%

Thing is, I get superior service rarely. And in Connecticut, even average service is rare.

I've always thought is was 20% for a good job. My parents did that and I've been doing it since I've been on my own (2001 ish)

I don't understand why anybody would tip for bad service. You're encouraging their horrible customer service. Makes zero sense to me.
