Believe it or not the stores are not taking a cut and it would be a major PR hit if they were found to be getting a slice of the pie without disclosing it.

The stores do it because even though it makes some customers uncomfortable it makes more people feel that the store is charitable and concerned about good causes.

^^^ This, even if it took until the 17th post to get there.

The cashiers are instructed to ask, and corrected if they don't. So they ask in a desultory, pro forma fashion, I shake my head no, and we both get on with our lives.

I always say, "no". Then I get the hairy eyeball.

Really? I've never had that experience. Something like that would actually get the cashier in trouble if a supervisor saw it.

The thing is you don't know if the charity is a scam and the business pockets it and the very least they get to write it off as a tax donation...

Yes, "you" do. It isn't and they don't.

I see some of you had experiences similar to what happened to me at a GNC a few years ago (I posted it in an old thread but it fits perfectly here).

"Did you bring your Gold Card today?"
No, I don't have one.
"OK, let me sign you up. It's free and you'll save $3 on this purchase."
No thanks, don't need one.
"But you'll save $3 right now and it's free."
I understand, I don't want a card.
"I can sign you up and you don't even need to carry it. I can look you up by your phone number."
No thanks.
"Well, if you don't want to save $3, how about donating $1 to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital?"
No thanks.
"It's only a dollar."
No thanks, I just need this one item.
"If you are going to throw away $3, why not give $1 to St. Jude's?"
No thanks.
"So you think the corporation needs the $3 more than St. Jude's needs $1, I guess."
<blank stare from me>
"I mean if you are going to throw away $3, you could give some of it back to sick kids."
I. Just. Want. To. Pay. For. This. And. Be. Done. Here.
"Oooookay, then. Here you go. <heavy sarcasm>And I sure hope YOU have a v-e-r-y merry Christmas."

That cashier was an asshole. They do get some sort of perks for signing you up for data-mining programs, so he (I'm betting) got pissy and way out of hand.

If you wanted to be an asshole, too, you could have brought his act to the attention of his manager. Stores frown on cashiers being assholes to their customers, for reasons.

lol, bunch of paranoid tight asses, bet no one could drive a nail with a sledgehammer in your guy's hole. Guaranteed you get screwed out of some change here and there all the time, your just not always aware of it. Then there's your tax dollars that are going to people scamming the system anyway so now your all concerned about dumping some loose pocket change to charities?

It's not that, it's the robotically enforced solicitation while you're trying to get out of there with your Cool Ranch dip and your toilet paper that most are objecting to.

Not me. I can say, "No" or "No thanks" or "Hell no" without breaking a sweat or obsessing about it afterwards.
