MP3's my first choice for a codec. It's universally compatible, and works well enough.

IIRC, it's 256 AAC without DRM (?)

That doesn't sound like much of a plus. 256k is pretty good, but who in the hell uses AAC except for Apple? I got some free itunes downloads years ago, then opened a account and bought a few at 99¢. I was sorry I did shortly thereafter, and quit using it. It's just too expensive for what you get.

Without DRM, you can convert it to whatever the hell you like.

Yea, but you lose further fidelity. Lossy-lossy FTL

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding

AAC is also the standard audio format for Sony's PlayStation 3 and is supported by Sony's Playstation Portable, latest generation of Sony Walkman, Walkman Phones from Sony Ericsson, Nseries Phones from Nokia, Android based phones, Nintendo's Wii (with the Photo Channel 1.1 update installed for Wii consoles purchased before late 2007), the Nintendo DSi, and the MPEG-4 video standard.

Other Portable Players

* Creative Zen Portable
* Microsoft Zune
* SanDisk Sansa (some models)
* Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) with firmware 2.0 or greater
* Sony Walkman
* Nintendo DSi
* Slacker G2 Personal Radio Player
* Cowon

This is why:

Advanced Audio Coding is designed to be the successor of the MP3 format and demonstrates greater sound quality and transparency than MP3 files coded at the same bit rate

And the only reason they support them is cus iTunes is the #1 music store and they'd be stupid not to oh and citing sound quality when majority of people listen to them on their horrible iPod makes no sense. If people cared about audio quality they wouldn't even think about AAC.

actually, if you cared about audio quality, you would not think about any of those compressed formats, lossless or not.

Lots of folks have decent PC speakers or headphones they use on the PC so quality counts there too. And of course many folks w/ other mp3 players can use AAC as well... as already mentioned so the quality counts for a lot more than just ipods.

If people cared about sound quality they wouldn't even think about AAC.

Are you retarded or do you just like repeating yourself, without listening to other poeple?

I have a small one that are the size of the nano. I don't know...I am struggling to really get used to it. The controls seem so unintuitive. I actually liked my iriver better (at I thought my river h10 was a pos). That poor excuse control pad or whatever you want to call it is not that good at all....and when you enable the touch pad on it, it is horrible (it does not respond well). For $65, it serves it purpose of a player that I can just set and forget while exercising. If you are the type of person that likes to manually shuffle through songs, this thing sucks.

I have a Sansa E250, and it's perfect for my needs. It's only 2gb, but I don't need any more than that, and if I did, it takes micro sd cards. The controls work well, and I don't need proprietary software to interface with it. If you keep your eye on woot.com, they pop up every so often at a great price.

It's the internet. they have opinions on stuff based on they read on other message boards, not personal experience.

According to the internet, all this is true:

1. Bose makes horrible anything that is not even worth consinderation.
2. Buying a new car is always a dumb idea.
3. Megan Fox is god's gift
4. Ipod magicially has worse sound quality even though it uses the same sound decoder/chip

the list just goes on.

ditto (huzzah for woot). Slam rockbox on there for a slightly improved interface and you're good to go. That said, when I buy music, it's usually off of amazon these days.
