Rock isn't dead. It still gets a lot of air play but it's no longer mainstream. The decline began in the 90s with the rise of hip hop to the masses and the return of bubblegum pop. Now hip hop is slowly being supplanted by house music and dubstep. Considering rock has been popular for almost 60 years, I'd say it's has a good run. Longer if you consider it to be a subgenre of blues.

Well said. I really like Hank Williams stuff its country but its to me the start of rock.

Here is my all time favorite song . This song and hanks style just grabs my spirit

The merging of punk, rock, and hip hop essentially killed the genres.

Rock was not the only casualty, so that may ease your mourning

It either died at the end of the 90's or early 2000's. It certainly didn't die in the 90's man, all I listened to was rock back then. It certainly morphed but to surmise it died is absurd.

Sorry but mainstream rock pretty much died somewhere in the 90s. Grunge came along and all the bands just started to sound the same, that and rap pretty much took over and destroyed MTV.

Just going off the top of my head, The Strokes are the last big band I can remember that had guitar solos etc and a general "rock" sound. I think what branched out from them, and what is popular now that might be called "rock," is in general pretty far removed from the classic sounds of the Zeppelins and the GnR type stuff that you might not call it rock anymore.

Then again I'm out of tune with what is popular nowadays

WTF Nov 23rd 1993? Besides being my 15th birthday I cannot find anything rock related to that date.

I'd say rock died around 2000. I'm still a 90's junkie.

American Pie -- Don McLean

A long long time ago
I can still remember how
That music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
**The day the music died**
So

[Chorus]
Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey in Rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you're in love with him
Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin'

[Chorus]

Now, for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But, that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin'

[Chorus]

Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singin'

[Chorus]

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil's only friend
And as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singin'

[Chorus]

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most-
the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost-
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singing

[Chorus:Repeat x2

It died about 2 seconds after Nirvana aired the first Grunge Rock video "Smells like Teen Spirit".

Shortly after that, Rap became infected with lepro C making it "C"rap and spread amongst the Gangstas causing their pants to become too big and baggy.

Top 40 took "too much talent" and money to continue with Madonna, Michael, Wham, Prince, Milli Vanilli, and the Fresh Prince, so it was dumbed down for the general population. Now we have Lady Gaga, N'Sync, Marc Anthony, and a myriad of other talentless hacks that can't even play an instrument or make music.

The 70's and 80's have tried to fight back, but all the booze, drugs, and STDs have taken their tole. Bon Jovi, Van Halen, the Stones, are about one hip replacement from the Home.

So, it took the backroads and ended up in the South and Mid West causing a Super Crop of Country. What Willie, Hank, and Johnny planted, has grown to a more popular "Country Rock" and Country. Although not a huge fan of the genre, it sure beats wearing baggy pants around my ankles, beatin' the 'ho, cop killa, wonderin' where you've been and if maybe you will call...

Greatest time for Rock Music goes from it's early days in the 50s to late 80's.

Rock died when someone broke the scissors, and all that was left was a sheet of paper.

if you think rock is dead you are looking in the wrong place

But that is the problem, you have to look these days. I have tons of new music that I think is really great but it is mostly obscure indie type rock and power pop. It is out there but it isn't on the radio anymore. The days of MAINSTREAM rock are dead. Hip-Hop harpooned it and the youth of today are mostly too stupid to look for something better.

I like all kinds of music starting with stuff from the 1940's all the way up until today. But the radio is populated with mostly mindless drivel. I guess that is why the kids these days are obsessed with zombies...they are zombies yet don't know the band by the same name.

When I was a kid it was pretty much the golden days of the radio. Late 70's early 80's where everything on the radio was ROCK and it was ROLLIN'.

Rock didn't die, it branched out.

EDIT: The other two I get, but what happened June 6, 1996?

Yea, screaming death metal and growling death metal with completely unintelligible growling vocals..

BTW, there is no comparison in magnitude of affect to the music world between the death of Elvis and Curt Cobain, especially since Cobain took the cowards way out. Now Elvis might have committed suicide but that is something we will never know. There are far more people in this world and future people that will remember Elvis, Cobain not so much.
