OK. Well... Cher's "Believe" was released in late 98, early 99. Autotune (and hypercompression) pretty much ruined whatever spontaneity rock had left, more than click tracks and synths ever did.

By 2000, a majority of popular recordings contained both autotune and hypercompression, some were even jazz and classical. I didn’t know we would be quizzed.

Sometime in the late 90's all the talented musicians started playing metal. All rock music has degenerated into 3 chord not talent garbage.

Listen to a band like Gojira or Meshuggah to hear some really interesting music. Some people can't get into the screaming, and I pity them, because metal music is the last surviving hope for rock music.

Rock music used to be a form of counterculture and that's what drew so many people to it. Rock has become so deluted that this is no longer the case. Metal is still considered Taboo, and I think that is the major reason while it is still going strong.

The Doors told everyone that rock was dead in 1969, decided they were being fucking idiots (which, let's face it, isn't something that Jim Morrison did lightheartedly), and then, nearly 30 years and one lead singer removed, decided, hey, why not let the world know that rock is dead, and, oh, by the way, has been for three decades, at which point they were greeted by a chorus of derisive guffaws for being holier-than-thou dipshits. And, hey, guess what, every single one of them knows more about rock than anyone on this forum ever will. And they were WRONG. They were as wrong as anyone has EVER been in the last 50 years. Because rock DIDN'T die in 1969, just as it DIDN'T die in the 2000s. Your taste changed. And you're now your parents and your grandparents complaining how music sounded so much better in your day, and what is this trash they insist on playing nowadays. Because you're smarter than The Doors when it comes to rock. You know it didn't die in 1969, that's ridiculous. It died exactly the moment you turned old.

Maybe you should turn that critical eye on your own lives instead of the world of music...

Rock died when American Idol took over. Once that happen every radio station wanted the next winner and sub winners and pushed all that crap on us. It began airing on Fox on June 11, 2002.

Rock isn't dead, you all just got old and jaded. My musical tastes are always evolving as I get older. "Rock" isn't rock like it was in the 60's, 70's or even 80's. Music has morphed and genres have intertwined. There's a lot of good music out there, you just have to turn the radio off and find it.

One could argue, putting the death of grunge singers in your poll means you don't like real rock (as you can see from some comments about how the grunge movement killed music, etc etc).

Pandora/Slacker are great ways to find bands you may never have heard of that are like bands you like.

I have no idea what any of those days are. No music genre is dead, people just get old and pay less attention to music and more attention to tv/radio; which is a lousy gauge of what's out there since very few acts have enough mass appeal for those stages.
