It depends on where they are in their popularity. Once they land a record deal and have corporate producers writing their music for them, they're really just performing someone else's stuff.Or it's the change in concert philosophy. Bands used to tour to promote their album sales, so they needed good music to sell. Now they sell "performances" and the show matters more than the music.
Rock isn't dead, its just not mainstream anymore, which is fine by me.
Bands like Mastodon, Gojira, Killswitch Engage, Dream Theater, Ayreon, Volbeat and many others are still releasing some amazing rock.
If bluesy classic rock is more your thing, check out Greta Van Fleet, a band that is a bit AC/DC, a bit Skynard, a bit Aerosmith and a bit Zeppelin.

There are a few bands out there now that are trying to bring the fun rock back, and I appreciate it a lot. I throw them out there a LOT, but I'll plug them again... The Struts are doing amazing things IMO. Their 1st album was everything we've been missing from rock since it took a dark turn in the 90s, and it's so damn fun to listen to.

....and when Gordon Lightfoot stopped touring.
I loved Royal Bloods first album, but they just came out with their second and I'm pretty disappointed. The bar was admittedly pretty high, but I still expected more.Greta is great! Getting a lot of radio air play around here. Also, Royal Blood has had my attention for the last year. I'm amazed they're able to get this much sound from a bass and drums (no guitar). They also make some of the best videos of the last 20 years:
One more suggestion for those that love Southern/Funky/Sludge Rock. Crobot. They have two albums out but their first one "Something Supernatural" is excellent. I've caught them in concert several times and met the singer. Awesome group of guys and just have fun doing what they do. That fun transitions to their stage presence.
I'm gonna disagree with a bunch of you guys... rock didn't die in the 90's; it died in the 80's. The whole hair metal thing made rock a friggin joke. If anything, the 90's brought rock back to life to some degree.
Holy shit, The Struts are playing with Greta Van Fleet this Saturday in St. Louis

If you can go to this, you'd be fucking stupid not to go. This would be a great show
Not really a fan of those acts. The St Louis show is 15 bucks to see a couple acts that I'm pretty sure will be huge in short order. You should come up to toronto for the Invictus Games closing ceremony then.

Bryan Adams, Buchman & Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson and Coeur de pirate will perfom.
