Rock isn't dead, its just not mainstream anymore, which is fine by me.

Bands like Mastodon, Gojira, Killswitch Engage, Dream Theater, Ayreon, Volbeat and many others are still releasing some amazing rock.

If bluesy classic rock is more your thing, check out Greta Van Fleet, a band that is a bit AC/DC, a bit Skynard, a bit Aerosmith and a bit Zeppelin.
Ayreon are sooo awesome.
I love everything Arjen A Lucassen does, all his side projects kick so much ass as well.

I really liked allot of the 90's alt-rock scene, but still pine for 60's & 70's rock (no so much for the 80's).

I'm gonna disagree with a bunch of you guys... rock didn't die in the 90's; it died in the 80's. The whole hair metal thing made rock a friggin joke. If anything, the 90's brought rock back to life to some degree.

Not necessarily metal but hair metal/glam IMO. Glam bands where it was about the hair and the chicks in the videos. Also you could say Video killed or temporally killed rock?

I simply loath most hiar/glam bands, but you have to be careful with labeling because according to Wiki Lou Reid is a glam band, wtf?

Also would like to point out while the Rock that you might not like today, there is tons more free music available on line these days from whatever decade you liked to keep your ears busy for years. I could spend forever in you-tube alone listing to bands I forgot and even ones I never heard of from years ago.

Hell, sometimes I do spend a couple of hours listening to old tunes

There is a distinction between the punk inspired NYC glam scene of the late 70s that gave us the NY Dolls, Lou Reed and Twisted Sister, and the Sunset Strip hair metal scene of the 80s that gave us Poison and Warrant.

Honestly, I blame the 90s. While trying to pick wedding music we started listening to music of each decade, and the 90s had a dramatic shift of tone in rock music. I don't know if it was grunge or what that caused it, but things got a lot more dark and angry, and the "fun" type of rock music started to die out. I'm all for some good hard angry rock/metal some times, but the past 25 years or so seems to be pretty much JUST dark and angry rock with very little upbeat type of stuff. Like what was mentioned before, I think that type of rock is starting to leave the mainstream so it's not in front of everyone like classic rock used to be. That's not necessarily bad if you know where to find what you like, but it makes it tough when looking for modern music that ISN'T angry or sad.

There are a few bands out there now that are trying to bring the fun rock back, and I appreciate it a lot. I throw them out there a LOT, but I'll plug them again... The Struts are doing amazing things IMO. Their 1st album was everything we've been missing from rock since it took a dark turn in the 90s, and it's so damn fun to listen to.

I blame the internet. I don't care how sophisticated iTunes or Spotify become, nothing will replace discovering new music through the NYC radio DJs of the late 70s/early 80s or recommendations from the kid handing out demo tapes at the local record store.

Sure you now have the instant gratification of endless music at your fingertips, but nothing beats being the only kid with a rare bootleg tape of Queen in Japan or making mix tapes for the ladies.

It's a double edged sword... what you said is true, but without the internet I wouldn't have seen your recommendation for Greta Van Fleet (which I've been playing all 4 songs from their EP on a loop since you mentioned it). Also because of the internet, I was able to boot up the google play music app that I subscribe to and listen immediately.

Sure the internet can cause problems, and I do believe that streaming services have devalued good music a bit, however I'd also say I've had a net gain with finding music because of the internet so I'm happy. There's some weird shit I ended up liking that I wouldn't have found without it. Back in the day, I only found out about something when everyone else heard about it too.

OK, I'll bite. What did R&R "evolve" into?

These days, it's stuff like Cage the Elephant and Arctic Monkeys. Listening to the Revivalists right now and it's pretty good stuff. I feel like The White Stripes launched the bluesy-rock style in the early 2000s and that's what today's rock formed out of, with a lot of folk influences. It's a bit hard to say, since I just started really getting into new music, which I regrettably ignored for a long time.

Either way, rock isn't dead. Rock is only dead if you're trying to find the "next" Rolling Stones or Bon Jovi.

King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard , great rock band from Melbourne, most commercial rock stations are so formulaic that i swear they only have about 30 greatest hits cd's and just put them on random

Very cool, While viewing many of their videos I found lots of other new bands I like. Always been a sucker for Psychedelic Rock - Stoner Rock - Acid Rock.

I'm with you on that, but by definition they are. The tricky thing about rock is that it encompasses a ton of sub-genres, lumping Bon Jovi in with the Foo Fighters and The Beatles.

For the record, I'm not a Bon Jovi fan.

Who knew the Netherland would be the epicenter of a metal revival.

You should check out the stuff both Arjen and Devin Townsend have done with Anneke Van Giersbergen.
