Big NFL fan, are you? They've already begun construction of the new stadium in Inglewood.

The real question is how long before they are run off due to LA poor attendance?

They'll get about 5 years as a "pass", since 3 in the coliseum don't really count and then when they move to their new stadium there will be new enthusiasm, but if they don't start winning after that...

Yeah, of all the places to put a stadium, they chose Inglewood. Probably because of the cheap lands due to random chance of stabbing and shooting.

Us SoCalians have way too many things to keep us distracted to entertain a failing NFL team.

And soon, the people in the LA TV market will get to experience the draconian NFL TV blackout restrictions, like the rest of us.

I think they're building a new stadium in Carson. I'm just glad it's not at the Rose Bowl. Let's save that for college football!

How did LA get an NFL team?
Jerry Jones and Stan Kroenke had way more juice than people realized going into the vote.

Just think if they would of ended up with 3 teams? Wasn't San Diego & Oakland talking about moving there too for a bit last year?
It never was going to be 3 teams. It was the Rams bid vs. the Chargers/Raiders joint bid. There's a lot of logic to a 2 team/1 stadium bid, but the Rams were a safer play (Kroenke has very deep pockets).

The Chargers were then given a 1 year option by the NFL to join the Rams in their new stadium, but only as a tenant. I think there's a fairly good chance that San Diego will not provide any meaningful financing for a new downtown stadium, so the Chargers will be "forced" to try to make a deal as Kroenke's tenant in Inglewood.

The L.A. Metro area can easily support 1 NFL team (regardless of competitiveness). 2 isn't unreasonable either, but I don't know how the Chargers would fair if they moved to L.A. and continued to suck.

The Raiders only option appears to be Las Vegas, but owner Mark Davis is "poor" by NFL billionaire standards and doesn't have the resources to privately finance a new stadium. I believe he's hoping casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson will bail him out. For now, it seems like the NFL will be "okay" with an NFL franchise in Sin City.

There is no way LA could support 2 NFL teams, on top of 1.5 NHL teams, 2 NBA teams, 2 MLS teams, 1.5 MLB teams, AND 2 excellent college football programs...on top of all the other cool shit that happens in LA every weekend.

I gotta say, that's ridiculous to actually type out.

Or, the NFL realized how crazy it was to not be in one of the biggest TV and merchandise markets in country.

Owners today finance only a fraction of the cost of an NFL stadium. The Vikings just opened their new stadium, with a cost of something like $1.1B dollars. There's what the state of Minnesota paid, the city of Minneapolis, and Hennepin county. Naming rights and sponsorships that go well beyond just the stadium name - there's a Hyundai club and various other corporate sponsors like Land O'Lakes and Miller Lite. Every square inch of unused space, inside and out is for sale. Plus, the NFL itself kicked in a couple hundred million. Someone who added it all up claimed that the Vikings ownership group might end up paying less than $50M total.

So you're telling me the most popular American sport can't out-draw less popular sports, hosting just 8 games (per team) a year? I'm a bit surprised that L.A. is getting a second MLS team, but demographically it makes perfect sense.

It depends on location. Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara was privately financed. I'm not saying they didn't get all kinds of ancillary help from the city, but the construction project itself was not backed by direct public funding AFAIK. Likewise with the Rams stadium project in Inglewood, but I could be wrong.

It's the same reason why Mark Davis can't build a new stadium in Oakland, even though there's land on the existing site to do so. Oakland sure as hell isn't ponying up any resources, even if the Raiders inevitable response is to move.

According to the following article (and other sources), Vikings ownership is contributing about half the cost of the new stadium:

That's the number before stadium naming rights and all of the other corporate naming rights and sponsorships that they'll sell. And before whatever the NFL contributed. Oh, and I completely forgot PSLs (up front fees enabling the purchase of season tickets), which amount to another $100M+.

I just can't see it happening unless both are winning teams. Otherwise one is going to be the football equivalent of the Lakers and the other is going to be the Clippers pre-Balmer.

If they didn't have their chance to support one NFL team numerous times and fail, why would you think they could support 2? LA are fairweather NFL fans to the max. Investors know soccer is on the rise and MLS teams are cheap. The two "emerging" markets are the US and China, and you aren't starting a team in Shanghai unless you're Chinese.
