Sad isn't it?
I will never get anywhere, I refuse to kiss ass.
I used to work hard, it does nothing for you.

It is sad. I used to work all sorts of hours and would even spend time at home doing research for my job. It only got me more work. Now that I left and work for a different company, I've decided to do a good job, but not to kill myself doing it.

I applied for a manager position a few years ago. I was a finalist, along with another guy. Now, the other guy was known for being a kiss ass and only being "Poor" to "OK" at his job, whereas I was known to be extremely good. I thought I was a slam dunk choice once I learned who my competition was. Want to guess who got the job? When I asked why I didn't get the job, I was told this guy "had more management experience." Care to guess what his "management" experience was? If you guessed "managed his own company," you'd be right! Had I known that, I would've invented my own company and put that on my resume, too.

Age 20, when I was offered a life altering work opportunity as a result of nepotism.

(or was it 19, when a friend got me a job in a warehouse.)

(or was it 18.5, when a friend's dad got me a job as a low level chemical technician)

(or was it 18, when another friend got me a job at an ice cream shop.)

I won't deny that there are plenty of examples of people being hired/promoted beyond their abilities due to who they know.

I also believe that many people use this as an excuse to explain why they didn't get the job or promotion they wanted, rather than admit that they didn't work hard enough or are not qualified.

Or they are jackasses, or they are fugly. Never ignore the human aspect of work.

If you're too good at your job they won't want to promote you out of it.

I suppose I should have realized this when I got one of my first jobs in fast food. Although the hiring manager, nor I liked the dude.
Although at the same time, I had asked a friend to keep me in mind for an open position at his job, because he worked in his families businesses, since he was old enough to work, but he gave the job to someone else, who already had a steady job.
So, eh. I'm sure it depends.

Principles are good and all, but when it comes to what I do and how much I'll make I'm willing to compromise a bit.

I'm not saying I'm going to sleep my way to the top (and not just because that would most likely be uber-gay), but I'm willing to utilize a connection or two. Also keep in mind typically, at least for me, the connections hook me up because they know what I can do.

I'm still young compared to most working folks here so I guess that's why I sound like an idealist. I wouldn't refuse a connection hooking me up on his own as per his needs or per the needs of his associates. I don't have a problem with that if the reason he chooses me has to do with my capabilities. However, I can't see myself asking anyone to hook me up. I would rather be a bitter recluse than a spineless suck-up. :awe:

LOL...I was like 5 years ago. Being in college was great. Now that i am out, that ideal logic no longer works.

Who you know is what gets you a job.

What you know is what enables you to succeed in that job.

That might be true in some cases, but in my career, I've seen many incompetent people get promoted and I wasn't even in their department or group. I just happened to interface with then on occasion and through that, and reputation, knew how they screwed things up.

Unless, of course, you consider "didn't work hard enough" the same thing as "didn't throw parties and invite the VPs." One guy got ahead by having parties and always making sure he invited the VPs, Directors, etc. Or, if perhaps you consider "qualified" as making up your own company, putting it on your resume, and considering that "management experience." Seriously, when I heard that excuse, I very nearly lost it.
