For no real reason I just browsed the fastest ddr3 selection on newegg ...

seems $500-$1200 is common for 16GB kits of the fast stuff ... insane

Well, there are some pretty insane kits out there, but I don't think they serve other purposes than more-than-mad overclocking and bragging rights.I think there was an arcticle on AnandTech benchmarking different speed RAM modules and concluded that there was little difference, certainly nothing easily noticeable,if at all, between a good 1600MHz kit and a 3000MHz one. Most probably because in the way RAM is used nowadays, bandwidth isn't really an issue.I suppose we could even do with 1333MHz and not notice anything bad at all.

Lower latencies, however, are another story. And the fact that really high-speed modules have massive CAS latencies should be like an "avoid" sign for the time being. When we are able to utilize the added bandwidth a high-frequency RAM kit provided, opinions may change.Till then, stick to reasonable stuff.I think of getting the 2400MHz Kingston only in the hopes I can achive 1866MHz with CAS latency 9 or 8.2400MHz in itself is kinda irrelevant to me,it's just the small price difference that makes me consider it.

I disagree completely. If you're in the market for 2400MHz DDR3 then clearly price doesn't matter to you and you might as well jump on the DDR4 when it comes around. There's no value in going for anything more than 1600MHz DDR3 at the moment unless its equally or cheaper priced.

A lol.

10USD difference and you get a much better RAM to boot, never mind the speed.

No. If you're in the market for 2400MHZ, you just want faster ram and don't bother with the 1.5V recommended limit of the Haswell memory controller. Or have an AMD CPU.

Apparently 2 reviewers payed over $1100 for that 16GB ddr3
insanity.
Could be work related. That thousand bucks could earn him a lot of thousands in time, just because of the faster RAM. On a consumer level though, I doubt it makes sense. DDR2 is still largely up to scratch with everything you throw at it these days... Computing is changing... But only because the old stuff is still kicking.

Exactly!Price differences are so small that it doesn't make sense to buy 1600MHz most of the time anyway.2400MHz might offer nothing perceptible, but it's certainly not worse than 1600MHz,so why the hell not?And it's like we both said, you most probably get better RAM along the way,not just with more bandwidth available. And 2400MHz is a point before latencies get out of control.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would give more than 1000$ for 16gigs of RAM,unless it's for a review and nothing more.In fact, the only case I could accept such a huge amount of money for RAM is if someone needs massive amounts of RAM for something like a server or something.16gb already makes little sense in a consumer PC,let alone 32gb or more.Similarly for speeds.Up to 2400MHz kinda makes sense because there are very small diffrences in price for a theoretically much faster RAM.Go faster than 2400MHz and the increase in price is exponential, while latencies skyrocket. No sense in doing so,unless there is something other than a RAMdisk that needs the extra bandwidth and has escaped my attention until now.

Considering I payed like $75 for my 16GB of samsung 1600 ... and it can overclock to 2400 speeds i'm just amazed at what I see being sold today.

Ah yes, that. The uphill ride the RAM prices have taken is...Bad.Very bad.I don't think you can find 16GB kits for less than like 140€ right now.A year ago and I wouldn't even think about throwing the extra 8gigs in there to make it 16.Right now though? The first thing that's gonna go if I'm restrained by my budget is the entra 8gigs of RAM.8GB is more than enough for today anyway, and with RAM being the single easiest thing to upgrage on a PC,it won't be hard to upgrade when/if I need it.

My 1866 Kingston Predator 2x8GB reached 2566MHZ stable... The timings were pretty crap though. I'm running it stock though, don't wanna fry them or my motherboard/CPU.

I was able to pick up my set of 2x8GB 1866 CAS9 1.5v for $115.00 on Black Friday. Now the price is about $200.00

Hasn't it been proven time and time again that super high DDR3 doesn't do jack for everyday use? Yay, you're running at 2800. Too bad it's at CAS14.

My Gskill Sniper DDR3-1600 CAS9 1.5v wouldn't even OC to 1650-ish, even with 1.55v. Seemingly, no headroom at all. (Not too surprising, once you learn that most of GSkill's 1600 RAM is really just OCed 1333 RAM.)

I get depressed every time I hear about this. The fact that I will have to shell out 150-200€ if I want 16GB of RAM while less than a year ago the prices were almost half of what they are now...Crap

Anyway,is there really any risk of causing damage without extreme overclocks?I mean,I've seen fried CPUs,GPUs and mobos, but never RAM or anything associated with it.
