When do you think the first DX12 games will arrive?

My guess is that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be the first major DX12 game. Xbox and Windows 10 exclusive, published by Microsoft, coming to PC early next year. Seems like a good bet.

Since games are a dime a dozen nowadays I'm going to guess early 2016 (spring)

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition possibly? It's coming next month on Xbox One, PC date hasn't been announced yet. I think we'll see it before the end of this year though.

As far as game actually supporting and using feature level 12_0, the very first game is probably going to be none other Fable Legends which is Microsoft's own in-house developed game ...

I can see Eidos Interactive following next with Deus Ex Mankind Divided with the rest of the publishers coming thereafter ...

Ditto. I'm assuming Fable Legends will be the first DX12 game as well. Maybe late October/November 2015?

Though has Fable Legends been confirmed for FL 12_0?

I mean does it even matter? Chances are the first several games are not going to be able to take the full DX12 potential.

So I'm thinking 2017 for significant shift.

We don't need full potential, just the overhead improvement for starters will be huge.

Agreed. I doubt the first games will use new features for a while. They aren't likely going to design games around the latest Nvidia GPU's only. The new API is likely enough for lots of improvements anyway.

That is what I am thinking as well, since it isn't as simple as just replacing DX 11 calls with DX 12, the whole design is different.

Besides, you know that most game makers will NOT be DX 12 exclusive, since the vast majority of their target audience will NOT be using win 10.

So, they might have parts of the code "DX 12 optimized", most of it will still be using DX 11 code path.

I think the adoption rate by the beginning of CY16 will be quite high. Giving it away for free to existing 7 and 8 users is going to significantly propel the market's uptake. I already have all three machines in the house reserved for Win 10.

The AAA games are being designed the same for all platforms now. That includes XB1 and PS4. They have a sort of thin layer in the engine itself, which makes different API calls for each platform. Except for exclusive features, it should be rather easy for these games to switch to DX12.

But the DX12 exclusive features will certainly be limited until most people are on DX12 hardware.

The first actual DX12 game that doesn't have its roots born in DX11? 2018 probably.

The DX12 code design should be much closer to the console codepath- fine grained async compute/shaders, simultaneous memory uploads, putting commands into queues from multiple threads... It's a very different design from DX11, but that may just mean that the PC port gets cheaper.

I'm proud that AMD laid the groundwork for us to have DX12 and that we are getting it. But, I just can't help but shake my head at Phil "Xone" Spencer tries to pander to our market. I mean, they can't even let a remaster of gears 1 come out on pc at the same time. Am I supposed to honestly take this man seriously. Oh, and let's not forget the moderator having to yank his speech away from the xbox at the pc gaming show. I wish I had been there, I would have pulled a "state of the union address" and said "you lie!!!!" lol. No, I wouldn't have done that of course, but it struck me as funny in this particular context.

Nope but it's a Windows 10 exclusive and we all know where that will be going ...

The game will most likely be using bindless extensions since lower overhead is all the rage these days ...
