When does a job become not worth it?

When everyday is a struggle to get up because you hate your job so much. When the stress of how miserable your are at your job is so consuming, that it substantially affects your life outside of work.

I was there a couple years ago. Finally got up the backbone to quit and change careers, after much encourage from my wife. I'm sooo much happier for it.

In your case, I'd quit. Having panic attacks over your job just isn't worth it. Change careers, go back to school...whatever. Even if you lower your standard of living through a lower paying job that you enjoy, you'll be happier. Sell your house (if you have one) and move in to an apt if you have to.

I imagine such a dilemma is much more horrific for people with kids and a standard of living that they *must* maintain.

I was right where you are two years ago man. Crappy ass job started to affect my health - I had chronic chest pains from the stress. Every morning when I woke up I would just lie in my bed for 15 minutes wondering "What if I just don't come in today? How bad off will I really be?"

I eventually went down to my HR manager and quit on the spot. It felt scary at first since I didn't have another job lined up but my stress was gone instantly. Fortunately, I had about 5 months worth of living money saved up. If you have ~6 months living expenses saved up I'd consider just giving your two weeks notice. No job is worth ruining your health.

Maybe you can find something part-time to get you by. My first job was a busboy. Talk about easy. Clean tables, bring out chips & salsa, split tips with the waitresses. Maybe you can do something like that. Another SUPER EASY job I had was a pizza delivery guy. That job simply rocked. Got to drive around in my own car listening to music most of the day, and with tips I was making basically $12-13/hr. That job had almost zero stress. You might want to look into something like that too.
