They're f-ing up BAD by not telling us anything. It could be alot better than the 8800, but everyone in the market already has a 8800 because they took way too long to release, the consumers aren't gonna want to drop another $600 on a card that at best, is a bit better than the 8800.

Why? Because of drivers.

It'd be nice to move back to a regular monthly WHQL release schedule from a company that actually cares about supporting its customers, unlike the beta scraps we have to fight over from nVidia whenever they feel like releasing them.

maybe the *real reason* AMD is late is 'cause they can't write drivers for the r600 family?

they will launch the entire *family* when they finally figure it out

i really ... seriously ... don't think nvidia is holding back on purpose ...

*cough*

of course, you can be *sure* that nvidia will somehow ... coincidently ... get a solid performance boost for the g80/81 when r600 finally IS released
:Q

ive heard from a guy under NDA that the drivers are a little patchy for the R600 atm, however openGL performance is apparently extremely good. DX performance is a little more hit n miss.

im sure it'll be sorted for the release though

yay, it'll be great in prey, but mediocre in others

Don't get your hopes up.

There is a press release in a couple of days in Tunisia, but I'll send you $5 if you can buy one before May 14.

Nice. I'm gonna wait and see before jumping on an 8800GTS though... their prices are only going to go down in the meantime. =)

Been lurking this thread since it's inception. As someone who currently owns both ATI and NVidia cards...

I want ATI's new cards to be kickass so competition will drive down prices across the board. $600 for a top of the line videocard is ridiculous.

Even if ATI's new top dog card only equals the 8800GTX, they will sell millions of them to Dell, Alienware, HP, Falcon, etc. You will see tons of ads online and in print: "Our UberDuber System Now Dripping With FPS Scorching ATI Goodness! Buy This $4,245 computer NOW!!!!'

And people will.

While "we" (the enthusiasts) are really the only ones that know WTH is going on, WE are not the buying majority. OEMs are, unfortunately.

If ATI's new top dog card absolutely crushed the 8800GTX, every one of us would buy out Neweggs' stock that day...Newegg would make a mint...and it wouldn't make a hint of difference to ATI (er AMD's) bottom line.

I want an 8800GTX or ATI equivalent. For about $400. I'll wait.

uh-uh OEMs "know" ... they have to

they buy the *best deals* ... keeping in mind *who* has the 'performance crown'

the problem is that most of these deals for DX10 cards are already being made for Q4 ... by June it is pretty late to have an entire line up by November.
--who wants 'old news' for '08. g80 is here and it 'works' [more-or-less] ... nvidia's line is here ... you wanna wait for a no-show ... IF i were a buyer i'd have my nvidia orders in with a few options left for ATi if it is exceptional.

AMD is BS-ing us that it "doesn't matter" and BS that "we can easily catch up" in Q4

they already lost

the question is How Bad ?

they *can* 'make it up' but ONLY if r600 and it's family is *stellar* - --across-the-board

they know this ... they are putting on a 'brave face'

it's AMD's bluff

good luck to them

Oh boo on you!

I don't see an Nvidia card in my sig. I see a *shock* ATI X1900XTX!! I'm actually patiently waiting for R600 to debut so I can make the best decision about which company gets to drive my brand new 24" LCD. If I was indeed "dripping with Nvidia love" you'd see a G80 in my sig.

I fear a lot of people (especially you yacoub) have misinterpreted me as a fanboy. I just want to clear my name and say I am not a fanboy of either company. My support and usually my money goes to whichever company delivers the best product and is driving the industry in the right direction.

During the R580/G71 days, that company was ATI and I rewarded them with my business. Now, that company is Nvidia and I have nothing but good things to say about Nvidia. Since the NV30 fiasco, Nvidia has really turned themselves around and righted their ship. With G80 Nvidia has delivered an awesome product to which ATI (now AMD) has had absolutely no answer for. I don't care what they have to say about their product or themselves as a company. Actions speak louder than words and right now AMD is all show no go and that pisses me off. I dont agree with their business practices thus far under AMD rule and I think AMD has one hell of a chance to ruin a good (in most cases) company that was ATI.

If AMD does deliver an a) better product than Nvidia or b) a comparable product at a lower price point then you will see me sing AMD's praises here on this board.

Until that happens, I dont see any point in sugar coating this dreadful 7 months that AMD has had in comparison to Nvidia. Unlike most people on this board, I dont think it is ok for a company such as AMD to promise a spectacular card and then deliver it 7 months late. I judge companies on what they bring to the table NOW. Not what they WILL bring to the table.

unless you count my "consoles are dead" thread .... i really DO think the PS3 has flopped ... they are just waiting to make it *official* and make funeral arrangements
--we tend to agree a lot

we just each like to "clarify" our own opinions ... rather 'forcefully'
... and usually 'end-up' in some kind of agreement - or compromise

we both want AMD to succeed

The thing is, they've delayed this card so long that we're nearing nvidia's next product launch. ATI could do their release for their card which at this point looks to be lackluster due to the lack of press and any kind of performance benchmarks. Nvidia could a week later announce their next product that trumps it and make people wait again. ATI has waited far too long after nvidia's launch and in order for them to actually garner any business from anyone other than die hard ATI people this card would have to blow the doors off the 8800. If it doesn't blow the doors off the 8800 Nvidia would be wise to lower the price on their 8800 enough that buying the 8800 makes more sense and then leak rumors of their next card.

The r600 would have to be next gen at this point and really smoke, they have waited too long if you ask me.

Don't worry, card like 8800GTX cost for nVidia just $80 and sells for $580, extra $500
is going to pocket and they won't lose for selling it even for $300.
All LOSERS ARE WE, CONSUMERS.

$80? Unless you know their chip fab cost, the BOM cost for the rest of the board, plus ops overhead, you are talking out of your @$$. All businesses aim for great margin. But Nvidia's is no where near as high as 86%.

Consumers have choices in many instances. In this case, you don't have to buy the 8800, any Nvidia gfx chip or a computer at all. A loser for making the choice to buy a specific luxury good? Sound reasoning there.

IMO, the worst thing about waiting so long for AMD to bring something to the market is trying to glean some useful info from the posts here in AT video that inevitably get overrun by the same members who inevitably turn the thread into the same exact thing as the last one. Perhaps AT needs to add a new forum entitled "r600 debacle: Do you think 'DAAMIT's' (too bad there's not an $ in there :disgust: ) strategy will put them ahead of the competition, or is Nvidia in the driver seat for a long time to come? Make your opinion known here!"

Oh well, for now they just call it "video"...

AMD swings to $611m loss

AMD is reporting today a first-quarter loss of $611m amid a price-war to hold market share won back from rival Intel.

The loss is larger than analysts expected, and AMD chief financial officer Robert Rivet calls the performance "disappointing and unacceptable".

...

The company expects revenue for the second quarter to be "flat to slightly up".

AMD continues to struggle against market leader Intel and its new line-up of chips that has made AMD's momentum hit a brick wall. Yesterday Intel reported a $1.61bn profit for Q1, with $8.94bn in sales (1 per cent down from last year.) ®

"disappointing and unacceptable" --kinda like their delay ... which *i* see as "related"
