Kissing us, of course.

I don't know about dogs, but with wolves, they lick the leader of the pack under the chin. It's a sign of respect and means "you're leader."

I think the dog is just a stupid animal and is licking off that peanut butter you have stuck on your chin.

To add to what Azraele said... I think it's kind of the same thing with dogs. When you see dogs together often times they will lick one another in the face... after sniffing butts of course... as a sign of respect I'm sure.
My dog respects me! LOL

LOLOLOL OMG why did i find that so funny?! LOL

But yeah, it's a show of affection... or at least i like to think that. I don't like my dog licking my face though... she has a habit of eating her poop sometimes.

you realize...the dog licks it's nuts...it's butthole....and it licks you. And you would want anyone or anything to kiss you with a mouth like that?

I love my doggy...but licking and kissing is a no no.

My little Dobe can lick my face anytime she feels like it. Great dog who loves to show her respect & gratitude by licking my face.

A dogs mouth is so much cleaner then a humans, you would be appaled to kiss another human.

My friends dogs like to lick my arms and any part of my body after we go out exercising.

I saw some guy on PBS who was great with dogs - I think he called himself "Uncle Matty". Anyway, he said that pups lick their mother's face in order to get her to regurgitate so that they can eat (yum!). In other words, Matty said that when your dog licks you in the face it means that they are hungry.

I read somewhere that it's a sign of subservience. My dog seems fond of licking everyone's crotch, I don't know what that means.

great link moralpanic, i esp liked this part "A dog's mouth contains a lot of bacteria," writes Dr. Gary "Ask the Vet" Clemons. "Remember, a dog's tongue is not only his wash cloth but also his toilet paper." " hahahahaha in your face people!!

They are comparing dog bites to human bites in that article.
I don't see how can be sound scientific proof.

A Dog's mouth is cleaner than a humans mouth, and when they lick you, its them showing respect for you.

so logically why is a humans mouth worse then a dogs? logically we brush, floss, sometimes use mouthwash. we don't likc things that are extremely dirty. we should be cleaner.

Debunk my ass!

Er... well... that came out wrong.

There are no facts in that Urban Legend article that refute the claim that canines' mouths are cleaner than humans' mouths, nor vice versa. The author even writes that he will rely on his gut instinct for his answer.

Anyhow, FWIW, I don't let my dog lick my face either...

I let my puppy lick me when ever she wants. I've even let her lick the blood of my hand when we wrestled too hard, and I got cut. By the way, it healed faster then any cut I ever had.

I think that all things being equal (either we don't brush our teeth or we brush the dogs teeth the same ammount as ours), the dogs mouth is cleaner. This is because they cycle their saliva a lot faster than we do. So they have cleaner spittle, as it is newer.

But seeing as how we brush our teeth (I would hope), I think that humans probably have cleaner mouthes in general.

Oh, and dog licks can either be for affection or food. When I get home, my dog is really excited to see me and licks my face. This is a sign of affection. But other times he does it because he is hungary or because he wants attention. So it depends.
