do you think P4 will show a hidden strength?

Ofcourse the X2 will probably be the best, but how do you think the P4 will compare to the regular A64.

P4s will likely be extinct by the time games really start to utilize multithreading. (I know Unreal Engine 3 has it in the works, but that's the only engine i even know of that's working on it, & it's still a couple years away)

But it is quite possible that if you still have an old P4, they just might show an improvement.

Not true at all. Age of Empires 3 will make use of dual-core CPUs and will be benefited from them. And AOE3 is supposed to be released on the 1st of October, this year. Will P4s be extinct by then? I don't think so. And if I remember correctly, a game based on the Unreal Engine 3 is supposed to come out by the end of this year or maybe by early 2006. That's just speculation. But AOE3 will definitely make use of dual-core CPUs (an AOE3 developer revealed this bit of information in aoe3.heavengames.com forums a month or so ago).

I don't think the PIV will win in a multi-threaded game application. Maybe if you ran a multi-threaded game application and did video encoding at the same time without adjusting the Windows scheduler manually for the AMD X2 the PIV would win but the AMD 64's are dominant over Pentium IV's single and dualcores. Of course, at 1600 X 1200 it is more about the gpu than the cpu at that point though it still favors the AMD's.

Edit: Dominant in gaming of course.

P4s are too ineffective for gaming. AMD's A64 already crushes the P4s and their X2s are slapping the P-Ds around.

How about right now with nvidia's multicore supporting drivers? Will they use hyperthreading too?
