diabetes, meet capt caveman... capt caveman, meet diabetes... he's type 2.

So this guy at work who is downing 6-7 Diet Cokes a day.. He is already overweight.. 45 years old.. The only food we ever see him eat is frozen meals that you nuke in the microwave...

What kind of health risk does/could he have?

Are the meals Lean Cuisine?

Diet coke + Lean Cuisine = Diet plan that will fail.

Red boxes..I think its Stouffers..

Stouffers I believe are crap. The Lean Cuisines are alright as they contain no preservatives.

I dont think either one of them can be that good for you in that kind of quantity. One here and there, okay. But two or three a day? Thats just what he consumes at work. I dont even know what he eats at home.

Funny thing is, whenever he is going to prepare it, he states "Ill be right back. Gonna go cook chow"

LOL kind of overstating the term "cook" there dont ya think?

I used to drink 6-8 cans of diet soda a day for about 2 years. I've switched to mainly water now and i do feel better. I fall asleep at better times now

I am on the recovering addict path as well. I used to only buy Sodas at the grocery store. Now I use a water filter pitcher and fruit juices. I have rarely tried a soda at a restaurant and I find them less tasty than I remember. At World of Coca-cola I did try nearly all of their soda products and I found that amusing for the experience but I did not feel the need to drink more.

crap...I have been having about a can every hour since 20 years+ ago. Used to pound down about 6-12 beers a day for several years, but the wife was worried about me dying (my physicals are always perfect).

Now I am on 12 beers a week, plus more if there are extra holiday days.

I don't get withdrawls and will usually cut out both beer during the week and soda when I start training.

Last few years I haven't been though since I majorly messed up my arm. I have been keeping active though with a manual reel mower and some other less automated tools.

without knowing his past health history and how he became overweight and how overweight he is, i couldn't really prognosticate anything. the best guess would be heart disease.

Damn...my parents drank so much diet coke that I can't stand it anymore. I drink lots and lots of water, and sometimes get sugar free flavoring (eg crystal light, nuun) when I need something different. I can't believe the money wasted on sugary soft drinks!

My dad was doing that for quite a while. He chewed a small cooler full of ice every day, accompanied by about 5-7 of those little .5 liter coke bottles. My nurse girlfriend asked him if he was anaemic, and he gave her an exasperated "OH no that's impossible, blarg blarg blarg." After he passed out one time and hit his head, they checked his blood. Anaemia. He started taking iron supplements, and he completely stopped the ice, cold turkey.

If you feel like you crave the ice as much as the coke, check into it.

I was the same way through my late teens, early 20's. I would usually drink 5 or 6 coke cans a day. I tried to quit and had the same problem you had. After a couple days I had massive head aches, and irritability. I only lasted a few days before I was back to 5 or 6 cans a day. I think the combination of cutting the massive amounts a sugar and caffeine was too much for my body to handle cold turkey

What worked for me was drinking a cup of water complimented with a caffeine pill in place of a soda. Once my body got weened off the sugar I slowly started cut out the caffeine pills. Now I only drink 3 or 4 sodas a week.

Remember a can of soda usually has 39g of sugar so multiply that by 6 cans and you 234g of sugar a day which is quite a bit.

that describes one of my coworkers, perfectly.
he really likes to brag to me about how those shitty Banquet meals cost him 89 cents at the grocery store.

Diet coke + Lean Cuisine = Diet plan that will fail.

the biggest risks are high fat/sodium intake (frozen dinners are high in both)

Geez, and I thought I used to drink 1 to 2 cans a day was bad.

I am cutting back now, 1 or 2 coke <can or 20 oz bottle> a week right now.

I use to drink 2 cans a day of regular Coke or Pepsi. After growing a brain and becoming more 'nutrition' (fat) conscious, I've stuck to Coke Zero and tried to be less reliant on bottled/canned beverages.

Surprisingly though, it's the portion size of Coke/Pepsi that really screws you. I checked the calories on some Green Iced Tea and it has more calories than a Pepsi at the same volume. Problem is the Pepsi was twice the size (both were individual-size bottles).

Caffeine wirthdrawal sucks. I literally feel dead tired all day not if I don't have my coke/caffeinated drink for lunch or breakfast.

What is with all these posts about diet coke and being overweight/ getting diabetes. Trust me diet coke causes neither (it has no sugar, lol).

i misread. didn't read the "diet" part.

Yes, the diet makes a REAL difference.

Yet, I've lost weight over the last several months.

I can't deal with soda. A cold Coke in the summer with lunch once a month is appealing but after a few sips the sugar and chemicals starts to get to me. I'd much rather have a refreshing glass of water if I'm thirsty. A couple cups of coffee in the morning with just a splash of half and half and no sugar is perfect, imho. It's like candy, processed foods, packaged snacks, etc. That kind of stuff was amazing to me as a kid and teenager but since I've grown, I crave fresh ingredients and real cooking. There are just too many good places to eat around here that the idea of eating Stouffers at lunch just seems depressing to me. No flavor.

Is Coke addiction an American thing? I don't know anyone that drinks that much pop, but whenever I am in the States I see people drinking it by the troughfull.

did you even read that article?

"Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

"One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda," Fowler suggests. "But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity."

Isn't that much soda/sugar intake a good way to set yourself on track for diabetes?
