looks like people like it and think its worth the money.
" I went from 100-150 latency to 15-20! Isn't that what this card is supposed to be all about? "
even tho its alot of cash it seems to be worth the money

Yeah, except there is one thing that I find terribly wrong with that. My parents have satellite internet and I don't care if you have the best NIC or the crappiest NIC, the severe bandwidth limitation and lag that a sattelite connection inherently has will make them perform about the same on the web. You cannot boost the connections between your dish and the satellite and back to the earth just by putting a NIC in your computer

That review screams viral marketing. Besides, my onboard LAN gets me an average ping of 50-60. The difference between that and 20 isn't enough to warrant spending $200 even if it does lower pings.

I see some advantage to offloading NICs for certain applications. This NIC is not even a true offloading NIC it has a processor that offloads some tasks. How it can be selective without having to hash every single packet out I dont know but it looks gimicy to me. It would not be suitable to offload anything a real server greade NIC would be able to deal with, like ISCSI for instance. Some lowgrade Intel Pro NICs would have a better feature set I think.

I am not saying its crap but its just not living up to its own claims because its a very narrow set of optimizations compared to what a real offloading card would have.

As someone who has done Q&A at Intel using high-end GbE and 10G NIC's/Switches that power the Internet's backbone, I think this is a bunch of marketting BS. If it decreases real-time latency by upwards of 90%, then all ISP's in the world would be using it.

It will be published early next week. It has been a very difficult item to review from a consistency viewpoint due to the testing methods utilized. I think the a few of the results will surprise some and certainly some of the results will not be surprising at all.

I totally fail to see how a specialized NIC could make any significant difference in online gaming. Besides... your ISP is the bottleneck, not the 100/1000Mbps connection between your machine and your router/modem. Now on a LAN you might get a tiny bit of a performance boost. But just how much of an advantage is a 7ms ping over a 10ms ping?? Um.... none! Besides... your $250 would be better spent on an extra gig of RAM. :disgust:

This months (Dec 06) Maximum PC reviews the Killer Nic and they gave it a 6.

Imperceptible ping reduction; very little performance gain.

The only real pros are the 400MHz cpu and the ability to run Linux apps on the board.

HotHardware.com did a review a few weeks ago (linking directly to article doesn't work?)

Extremetech.com just posted a review. They claim it would be incredibly tough to sell, even if the price dropped to $99. Win/Lose 3-4 frames, depending on the game. Win/Lose 8ms latency, depending on the game.

While they both agree it 'sort of' does the job, Extremetech was a little more brutal in giving it a 4/10 score. HotHardware also agreed it was way too expensive but could show some potential if someone came up with ingenious ideas to tap its processing power.

Has anyone seen any straight-ahead throughput measurements? I didn't see any on HotHardware / ExtremeTech.

Hopefully AT will include at least their typical ntttcp measurements.

I guess it's a very throughout review, or maybe they just have something *cough*8800*cough* which is more interesting to bench

I must admit that I am far more likely to get one of those *8800* things than the killer NIC

Here's a sample of a "good" review

It actually does work as adverstised.
All those review sites can`t be wrong!
Just because the review sites don`t back up certain peoples assertions that it is junk doesn`t mean the review sites are wrong!
But as was stated the price is not worth the gain in performance.

Its nice to see thst anand`s site will be doing a review!

Well talking about reviews on this thing, what should be said for the ones on NewEgg?

Sounds like a few people are saying there are issues with this thing causing system instability, and crashes, lockups, BSOD, etc...

Then it was pointed out that negative reviews on their fourms have been removed.

Ask yourself these questions, what hardware is perfect in computing and doesn't have problems?
What forum have you ever been to that deals with computing and never seen anything negative before posted?

All I can say is something looks odd....

sure its an expensive toy but if you got $250 to spare then why the hell not?

Because I'd rather give $250 to a bumb on the street. At least someone would have a good time and I feel better about it than having a $250 NIC in my box screaming "SUCKER" everytime I opened it.

Why do you "hope not"? Are you allergic to knowing new things?

as we all know this card is SOOOOO extremely good it not only magically decreases your ping times, it even makes it possible to achieve NEGATIVE pings while gaming !

This is exactly what happened whil AT was testing this card !
They played CSS online and, in a weird and bizarre attempt to overclock this card, using dry ice and liquid nitrogen managed it to clock this card up to 9 billion megahertz !

The incredible negative ping created by the card was equivalent to -27 years (actually -851472000 seconds), opened up a GIGANTIC wormhole and sucked the tester right back in time !

Now they're stuck in the 80s and desperately seek to transfer that amazing review to 2007 so we can read it....but there is still minor problems getting online. They're waiting now for the C64 to be released and "somehow" to connect to the internet...and that means patience guys, patience !
