When Logging on XP it logs right off

Running XP home ed. Everytime I click on my name at log on screen it says logging on and then immeditaly says, saving settings and logs me off. I am right back at the log on screen.

I have tried safe mode with same results as well as logging on as admin. Last known boot did not work. I also tried holding down shift while booting to avoid loading start up apps. I am looking for my system restore disk (without luck) so I can do a reinstall of the OS only. As always there are files on hard drive that I can not lose.

If anyone has any ideas please help.

I wish! No I have had this system for about 8 months. Bought it new and os was OEM from manufature. Thanks for the idea.

1 Get into the recovery console. XP cd

2 Get the file userinit.exe from another computer. (location windows/system32 folder)

3.- Overwrite the userinit.exe original file (from the infected computer) with the new one (use a cd or disk to transport it)

(Command e:/userinit.exe c:/windows/system32/userinit.exe)

4.- Rename the userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe

And that should fix your problem.

This worked on an XP box that kept on login the user out when she tried to login on any account
