Okay... I've been waiting for a LOOONG time to buy a new computer and I think I'm just about ready. But the problem is, KT266A, palomino and the Geforce 3 Titanium are RIGHT around the corner... but I don't think I can wait another 2 weeks. seriously. Should I just cave in and buy now or agonize myself and wait another two weeks or so... my primary concern is if I am gonna be able to notice any real difference with the AthlonXP/KT266A/titanium if I buy that instead of the 1.4 tbird, ECS mobo and a regular gainward gf3. I do a lot of design work and i also game a bit on the side as well. Will the performance increase really be noticeable in what I do?

It looks like you have access to a PC now, so wait for the new items to hit the streets.

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago. Then I bought a new 2002 car.

I can wait.

None of my current applications or games really require more than my measley 800Mhz. And the rest of my computer is upgraded except for CPU and MB.

Being in the car business, I can understand buying a 2002 for slightly more than a 2001 BUT the computer situation will NEVER change. There will ALWAYS be something 2 weeks away.

Right now I have a 200mhz P1 MMX proccesor with 32 megs of SD-pc33 ram with a 4.8 2400 RPM 66.4 MS seek time HD, 15 inch moniter, Sounblaster 16, ATI monster pro 2 meg video card, some horrible horrible mobo and built in speakers.

I have waited 4 years and finaly am able to upgrade my computer to my new beast.

Including KT66A Mobo, Palomino 1.53ghz and Geforce 3 Ti 500 and a 21" IBM moniter.

What's 2 weeks compared to the benefit you will get from waiting? Personal decision, but in my case I definitely plan to hold out for the KT266a, Ti-500 and 1.53 palomino

wait 2 weeks and n matter what upgrade (so that means u should be able to get atleast a radeon 8500 or geforce 3 ti 500 maybe and a kt266a).

yet i doubt the athlon xp will be out by then

that way u wont keep waiting.

AthlonXP should be out on the...10th I think. Geforce 3 Ti500 shoukd be out on the 9th. But the Radeon looks awfully alluring, especially with the 8500's sub-$200 price tag. THat, and plus it's already out.

KT266A is primarily what i'm waiting for - I can live with a 1.4 Tbird. Maybe I'll buy those and a Radeon all on Wednesday.

Buy now. There will always be something better/faster coming out tomorrow. Besides, think of the pleasure you will have sitting in front of your brand new faster than the speed of light computer. Go for it. You deserve it. You earned it. It can be yours now.

Actually. I paid less for the 2002 than a 2001. It was the "ad car" at the ad price.

I need a car to get to work. I can make due with 800Mhz for a couple more months.

It is all based on "needs" and "priorities". Often your "need" is a "want".

Carefully and honestly examine your motives and you will answer your own question. No one can do that for you.

i was doing the same thing, waiting waiting .... i caved in last week and ordered an ecs and 1.4 tbird. i got tired of waiting. you can always sell the ecs and 1.4 in a few weeks for pretty close to your initial investment. thats what i figure i will do. if the pallys and kt266a boards are THAT much better i'll just sell it and get the latest and greatest.

especially with the 8500's sub-$200 price tag.

No way the 8500 will be selling for that low unless they purposely want to cut out any extra profits.

Really it's your call. Me I'd wait, but I don't have and won't have any money to build a new PC for a while so this doesn't apply. Truthfully, as far as the Athlon chipset/CPU market, I think things are finally going to quiet down for a while. So if u can, wait until Mid Oct., then if u're gonna oc, get a Athlon XP 1.6GHz, Abit KR7A-RAID, and GF3 Ti500.

The truth about AMD is they won't be able to increase their chip mhz, so they are calling it xp1800 etc.

Ah the age old question: to wait or boldy go where no wallet has gone before. Given the short time until all that Kewl New Stuff arrives, waiting makes sense.

On the other hand you'll be venturing into uncharted and potentially buggy territory as nobody yet knows the true stability, reliability and performance of the upcoming Stuff. So buying the Old Stuff means you get proven products with the latest patches merely a link away. So buying now makes sense.

On the other hand, if you're concerned about longevity of your purchases it's almost always best to buy the Kewl New Stuff simply because it will last you longer. Sure you pay a little more now but if you don't upgrade every other month you'll likely save some money in the long haul. So waiting makes sense.

Of course you need a system NOW and you realize only benchmarks will truly "feel" the difference between the Old and New Stuff. People will be ranting and raving about how much faster the New Stuff is but you're secure in the knowlege that if you sat those folks down on systems with both Old and New they would not be able to tell which system they're on without running their precious, self-validating benches. So buying now makes sense.

On the other hand, if you wait and then decide the Kewl New Stuff is too pricey and just doesn't offer much bang for the buck, well then mister that Old Proven Stuff is still waiting for you. And it may just be priced that much less! So waiting makes sense.

Got it?

LOL JellyBaby

I am in a similar dilemma myself. Currently the newest part of my system is an Intel Pentium 3 800MHz, but I'm running it on an Abit BH6 and everything else is at least 2 years old, some closer to 5. I think I'm convinced that I want to wait for the KT266A chipset mobos. I haven't even heard of the GeForce 3 Ti, so I guess I need to do some more research (dang, just when I had it narrowed down to between the Radeon 8500 and the Gainward Cardexpert )

I think I'll be happy with a 1.4 gig Athlon, especially when a retail boxed proc is only $120.

Thought I had decided on which CD-RW to get, the Plextor 24x10x40, but Bext Buy has the TDK VeloCD 16x10x40 for $80 after rebate, so that's awful hard to pass up

Ah well, I chose the darn hobby, now I've got to make the best of it

The wait will likely be more than 2 weeks as everyone will be ordering them. By the time you get it will probably be 3 weeks at the earliest.
Also you will have to tack shipping time onto that and the wait is 1 month.
I would build now and sell later.
This way you can enjoy what you've been waiting for and chances are you won't have to upgrade fo awhile after you see the speed of what you got.
Of coure you and I will always say, I should have waited, but now Iv'e learned to wait because a 1 gig oc/1.430 is plenty fast fo me now.
I will read the reviews and do research before I order.
But for now the reviews of all the stuff out currentely, you could just pick up the ECS motherboard and get the rest for now., It will only set you back 65.00 and you could sell it later for not that big of a loss.
You may end up saying you don't have to upgrade after you see what the ECS does.

Good Luck
