So I'm now positive that I will be leaving my current job come May of next year. I'm 5-6 months out, and have been wondering about picking a date in May and putting in for my resignation. Is it far too early, though? Or do you think they would appreciate all the advanced notice? The position shouldn't be terribly hard to fill, and I'm not really concerned with being "let go" if they realize I'm leaving in a few months anyway.

I'd wait till the two week mark, no need to let them know now. If your situation changes between now and then, you won't look stupid recanting your resignation.

thats a little early in my book. but, if you aren't worried about being let go early, oh well, they'll live.

Depends if you can afford to leave now... If they can do without you and especially in the current state of the economy, they may very well tell you to pack your things up immediately and leave which would cut you off 5 months pay. Otherwise give em 2 weeks notice.

3 weeks. They might appreciate the 1 week advance of the 2 week notice.

Or you could declare renegade status now, and pretend to work for the next 5 months.

Unless you're ready to be fired immediately upon giving notice, (many places will indeed do this) I'd wait until no more than two weeks prior to your actual date.

You really don't have to tell them anything. 2 weeks to be nice but no more. How well do you like working there? And what kind of job. If it's retail job you had while going to school I don't think I'd bother, there's such a high turnover rate that it really don't matter.
