Last year. Most amazing thing, I just opened the front door and stepped onto the porch to get the newspaper in. I had not been outside for more than 1 or 2 seconds and boom. Little kamikaze bastard got me right on the leg. No nest or hive nearby, didn't try to swat it or even see it and got nailed anyway. That's not supposed to happen, bees very rarely sting unless they're provoked.

How ironic, since as a kid I used to stomp on bees with my bare feet and I've never been stung.

Maybe this one was lying in ambush trying to get you and whacked me instead. Damn case of mistaken identity.

Last year while mowing. Bees, hornets, yellowjackets, whatever the hell they are - they have taken a liking to nesting underground in our yard lately.

Easiest, safest way of killing off an underground nest: a clear glass bowl.
At night, when the hive is sleeping, put the bowl upside-down over the nest, and make sure that it's tight against the dirt. The hornets come out the next day, and try to go about their business. Since the glass is not directly over the hole, and since it's clear, it doesn't register to them as blocking the entrance, so they don't try to dig a way out. They just crowd in there, and either die from heat, lack of food, or dehydration. In time, the whole nest dies out.
Easy, no chemicals, and no risk.

Never stung by a bee/wasp, but many times by fireants (which is basically a wingless hymenopteran). Does that count?

Last summer, mowing the lawn, on more than one occasion. Mowed over an underground hornet nest, and they got pissed and stung me in the legs a couple times. A few weeks later it happened again with a different nest. That stuff hurts. Just thinking about it makes me cringe. This year I will keep a much closer eye on the lawn for bee movement, and I'll dress heavy when mowing. Sure hope they don't have any friends move in this summer.

3 years ago. went out on my deck to enjoy the morning and felt somthing on the side of my leg just above the knee, sorta like my shorts snagged a hair and pulled it out. then a split second later it felt like molten lead went into my leg. F*cking yellowjacket got me. :|

It didnt swell or anything but it made me really tired and i took a nap. when i woke up my knee was frozen and felt like Berry Bonds slugged me in the knee with his bat.

I have been at war with yellowjackets ever since. i keep about 5 cans of wasp spray handy at all times. the bastards are everywhere. I destroyed two small nest today.

Yea, I know what you mean. At my new house, there was at least 3 yellowjacket/wasp nests and I've killed them all, but one or two pop up every few days or so. I haven't been stung at my new house yet, but it's only a matter of time, I suppose.

But I did get stung by a bee on my middle finger about 8 years ago, and my middle finger was swollen to about twice its normal size.

Coupla years ago, right when I opened the door heading out to my balcony, got stung twice in back of my neck. Ran inside, closed the door, looked out the glass and saw a nest in upper left corner of the door frame. Roommate and I didn't set foot out there until exterminators came a week later.

You got stung because your brothers work on a bee farm? That's like saying you have an STD because your brother had se...you know what? I'm not even gonna go there.

That doesn't even make sense.

Last year I was cutting down a tree and got stung about 25 times by yellow jackets.

A couple years ago there was a wasp nest on the eve of my grandmother's house and I didn't have a ladder with me. I attatched a can of wasp killer to a pole and started spraying them and got stung four times. One sting was on my eyelid which hurt like hell.

I've been stung countless other time but the only other one I really recall was standing in the line at Disney World as a kid and the guy behind me said behind me said "don't slap your neck....there is a bee on it". I immediately slapped my neck and got stung. Spent the whole day with a throbbing neck........

Last time for me was summer of 1996. I was rushed to the hospital for an adrenaline shot, and 1/2 day stay. I ended up with one less pair of pants & boots because they had to cut them open to get me out (total body swelled & hives). My fingers was twice the size that they normally are, I barely able to see out of my eyes, and for the first time that I can see my forehead with out a mirror due to the swelling.

I was lucky to be alive from 3 warps stings.

Grabbed the outside handle of a storm door and a wasp was on the inside part of it, that one really hurt. I think about it almost every time I start to open that door from the outside now.

Another time I was mowing the lawn at my parents' house and my dad had a couple of bee hives. I got too close and three of them came after me and chased me all the way around the house. One of them got me.

The worst time was when I was riding a horse and I decided to let her graze for a while. She stuck her nose in a nest of yellow jackets and they swarmed out. The horse takes off bucking with me on her back and eventually bucks me off. It was summer and I was wearing shorts and tennis shoes with no socks. I took off running, but for some reason a bunch of them congregated on my right ankle. I couldn't even see it for the bees on it. I finally got far enough away to get them all off, but my ankle swelled up big time and turned black and blue. The horse was just standing there looking at me like, what just happened?

Nine or so months ago. Bee/wasp stings are overrated; it's feels no worse than a hard pinch.

I was in my truck last fall driving along and suddenly there was a huge bee, one of those really dark, almost black ones, at least a an inch and a half long inside bouncing off the windows. I opened up all the windows and would have sworn it flew out.

A few minutes later, it was in my hair, and I kind of freaked out and swiped at it. When it stung me on the outside of the left ear, it didn't hurt, I just felt it tear it's ass off, and could feel the stinger pumping away. I pulled it out and THEN it started hurting. It swelled up really big for a few hours, and by the next day, it was nearly gone.

The last time before that, I was trying to get rid of a wasp nest on the side of the house near the back door. The can of stuff I used lost all it's pressure as soon as I started spraying, and all the wasps came pouring out of the nest, the size of a small suitcase.
I got inside ok, and waited till everything seemed to calm down. About 4 hours later, I went out and almost instantly got stung on the hand. My hands are pretty well calloused up, and it just barely hurt a little bit. It kind of surprised me that it was so minor, as the wasp was about 2" long, and the stinger was pretty big.

I can't remember the last time, but I remember one pretty bad time was when I was 16 or so..I was walking down the river (kinda wading/jumping between rocks/walking on the bank...it was only a few feet deep in most parts, since it had been a dry summer), and I brushed against a branch. Little did I know that there was a wasp nest in it...a few feet further down, I feel this sharp pain in my neck. I slap at it, and then there's more...next thing I know, I'm sprinting down the river, falling into the water and trying to drown them, slapping my neck to try to kill the bastard who went down my shirt, and the whole time they are all swarming around me and stinging me whenever I'm above the water. I ended up having to kill them one by one, crushing them in folds of my shirt or against my skin. I had swollen lumps all over my face and neck for the next few hours.

Last summer, I was working in the yard, accidentally got too close to a nest, and was stung right on the earlobe by a wasp.

Last summer I was cleaning my Grandpa's basement windows and I disturbed a wasp. I got stung but it was through a shirt so not too bad (plus, as I get older, pain doesn't seem to affect me as much). Not too big a deal.

I think there are multiple factors involved with how much it hurts. I get stung by yellow jackets probably 1-2 times per year (we have several fruit trees and they like to gather on the fallen fruit) - I even made a thread about the little bastages last summer. Most of the time it's a short-lived feeling, except for the itching. I have been stung around joints, however, usually the ankle, where it's swollen up and hurt for days.

Hornets have the most painful sting in my experience. I got dinged twice about 10 years ago trying to get a hornet's nest out of my dog house.
