they are not, the i7 costs an arm and a leg, they are trying to undercut the core2 45nm.
Which is going to really suck for them when intel introduces the i5 and... is it i3? (just guessing) at lower price points and using 2 chanel DDR3 and 2 chan DDR2 respectively... and stop making 45nm core2 processors. (since it is on the same fab as nehalem, it honeslty does not make sense to keep making it)

Isnt the point of AM3 to use DDR3? So how would i7 cost an arm and a leg against it?
The main knock on i7 is the DDR3 and MB prices. The actual processors I have seen for low $200s at Microcenter and Frys on special....

Right now, the i7 920 is $290, PhII 940 is $229 (Newegg prices). Considering the performance differential, that seems fair to me.
LGA 1366 boards are more than 2x as expensive as AM2+ boards, though. If mfr's hold the line with AM3, then AMD has a considerable advantage there.

true... but even if it doesn't, what happens when the P55 is released.

The real market is not the few thousand enthusiast people that hang out on AT or HOCP, it is the OEMs. 99% of people buying a computer couldn't care less about its overclocking potential. Since the margins on OEM computers is usually only a few percent, I think AMD has a really good chance of doing well with the PhenomII since Dell or HP will be able to sell an entire midrange system for 100.00 cheaper than using Intel parts. AMD's problem has always been one of perception and marketing. The average Joe thinks that an Intel system is inherently better for some reason. Dollar for dollar, that simply isn't true.
