When I shoot I want to be able to feel it (and show the bruise afterwards)

... I have shot a .50AE DE though...

Pffffht, forget that gas-operated pansy piece and let us know when you're ready for a real gun...

Prices are already down. 38 cents/round for Federal XM855, 35 cents/round for XM193.

"...that bulk buying — whether ammunition, computers or stationery — is the norm for reasons of economy, and is especially sensible in the era of sequestration so zealously approved by Congress. D.H.S. says that its plan to buy about 750 million rounds in the next five years — 80 percent for training purposes..."

So they plan on fireing 150 million rounds in active duty in the next 5 years, maybe someone could show them how to hit what they are aiming at or are they planning on killing 150million bad guys?

One of these things is not like the other. Ammo doesn't go bad as fast as, say, milk and eggs.

Uh... Why are you using walmart pricing as a guide? Their ammo is always expensive. You can get 35c per round from proper online ammo sources.

As Wreckem said, it's function of supply and demand, free market capitalism. For the past several years you have had widespread panic buying of guns and ammo. Given the mindset of a substantial minority of the American public, I don't expect this to change in the foreseeable future or until some other fad replaces this one.

Plus if the ammo manufacturers bought more machines and hired more people to try and cash in on the current prices they would fall and the investment would wind up a bad one. My guess is they are running their current lines 24/7 and paying out the overtime rather than increasing capacity through investing in more machines..

AR15 ammo? You mean peasly .223?

He probably means 5.56mm, which is slightly different in that it tends to feed better with gas automatics like AR15's and others.

Also you can get AR's in 7.63 and 6.8 and even 22's.

So yeah, OP is not a wise man.

The 600mil is the training and recertification.
He was talking about the 150mil rounds fired in live active duty, which is not training and recertification.

pretty sure they still need ammo for use after training...guns are pretty useless without ammo you know.

care to explain?

I don't follow.

Related: I swung by a Walmart on the other side of the state. My local Walmart has always had plenty of ammo on hand. Apparently at the more rural stores, the same isn't true;

that looks like my local walmarts

I'm getting ready to buy my first assault rifle. A co-worker of mine (a gun nut I trust) has suggested I buy a gun that uses 7.62x39. After firing his AK47 and his Saiga 12 I agree with him. He said it's much easier to find ammo and at a much cheaper cost. He's going to help me find one for about $600. I told him it must be Russian made, no cheap Chinese shit.

Chinese-made AKs haven't been importable for decades now. And unlike the average Chinese-made item, their guns are usually quite good. Norinco firearms are still imported in Canada and the Canucks sure like them (if they can own them that is).

You can get a AMD-65 or WASR in your price range, though I wouldn't recommend either. Probably best to buy a Saiga that's been converted to accept 30 rounders at your price target.

308 ammo isn't cheaper than 223

308=7.62x51

I"m talking about the AK47 round=7.62x39

A quick search is showing .35 a round.

another search .30 a round

Google some custom AK47s. I thought that AKs were like the movie Red Dawn(1985), wood AKs. They're not, they can be customized just like a AR-15.

Why the crap would you pay twice as much for a AR-15 with the expensive 5.56 ammo prices?

I have nothing against Soviet-Bloc firearms and may have one in the safe, but no serious enthusiast has trouble understanding where the AR platform is vastly superior.

Strange post.

Yeah because the 5.56x45 is such a man stopper and a reach out and touch you round?
It's not.

That's why the military started issuing M-14s to our service men in Afghanistan.

Since I am not kicking in doors in The Sandbox, and am already neutered to 10rd magazines (supposedly) which don't make good battle weapons anyway...I prefer the accuracy of the AR platform over the AK when I am destroying paper enemies at medium distance.

However, this thread isn't about that, and it is a beaten dead horse on the internet already.

You are welcome to your preference, but when you come into an AR-specific thread and state that nobody should by them, and that your preference is superior, it is a troll alarm.

I never said not to buy a AR. My dad, my brothers all bought ARs. It's about price per round. A round placed in the right spot will kill a man, period. I'm just saying that the AK round per round is the better price option, right now.

.36/rd for 5.56 new brass, (or if I wanted to just shoot .223 out of it, .27/rd for steel), from the comfort of my office chair, is fairly reasonable these days.

FYI there seems to be a good amount of 7.62x39 for .24/rd

They issued m14s to SOME soldiers for specific purposes. No one claims the 556 is the perfect round for everything. But its a very good all purpose round. Id ratherhave an aluminum m4 and 200 rounds of 556 humping it around the hindu kush than a steel m14 and 200 rounds of 762.
