I admit he's a good actor, but I find him annoying for some reason. I don't care either way when he or anyone else gets an oscar.

It seems most are making the mistake of assuming winning an Academy Award means you gave the best performance in a particular category. I think anyone that pays attention to this stuff understands while that might happen on occasion, it doesn't always work that way.

It is a "political" process as much as anything else. The studio backing the film/actor for consideration and the actor must participate in the circus to have any real shot.

I get the feeling DiCaprio is one those actors that feels he should win on his own terms, based on his performance and not by jumping through hoops like a trained monkey.

For the record, while I think he is a fine actor, I don't think he has had a role where he should have won the award just yet.

IMO he was a better choice vs Forest Whitaker in 2006

Blood Diamond was a great movie, and he was pretty good in it, but Forest Whitaker was scary as hell at times in the Last King of Scotland. I'd even say Leonardo's co-star (black dude) deserves the Oscar more than he does for that movie.

Probably has a good shot with Wolf of Wall Street this year, particularly after the Django snub at the recent Oscars.

It annoys me when actors get an oscar because they played a character that people liked rather than their acting performance. It reminds me of when I was in single figures and thought that Mark Hamill was the best actor because Luke Skywalker was a GREAT CHARACTER! How has this guy not had more roles?

Examples:
Christoph Waltz in 'Inglourious Basterds'. Brilliant character, brilliant script. Was it exceptional acting? It was competent/good/believable, yes. Admittedly I'm not sure what the competition was like in that category for that year, but looking at the wikipedia page for it, it doesn't look like it was up to much.

Julia Roberts - Eric Brockovich. She acts exactly the same way in every single movie. How did she even get nominated?

Christian Bale - I haven't seen 'The Fighter', but going by his past performances, I would be really surprised if it's oscar-winning material. IMO (from what I've seen), his best performance to date was in American Psychp.

Swifty had to take matters into his own hands 50ish).

BD is still Leo's best acting job.

Had he a bigger role in Django Unchained, he may have gotten a nod for support, but honestly, with half the screen time, Samuel L Jackson's performance was far superior. I HATED him in that movie; I want to put my hands on his neck and squeeze the Uncle Tom out of him, which means he was fucking awesome!

He'll probably get a shot with "The Wolf of Wall Street". He's on an acting break right now so if he doesn't win next year then it could be awhile.

What should he win an oscar for? I agree he's a good actor but he's competing against better actors.

Look at the best actors in recent years and ask yourself if he's better than any of them.

Daniel Day-Lewis - He's not even in the same league.
Sean Penn - close. Maybe not.
Denzel Washington - not even in the same league
Russell Crowe - close. Maybe.
Kevin Spacey - not even in the same league
Jack Nicholson - not even in the same league
Tom Hanks - not even in the same league
Al Pacino - not even in the same league
Jeremy Irons - not even in the same league
Anthony Hopkins - not even in the same league
Nicolas Cage - ok, Leo missed his chance. Where the fuck was Leo in 1995?

Here's the thing though. I personally think he's getting better and better with each movie. He's also still young. Give him a few more years of these great movies and I think he'll find a role that will win him something.

DiCaprio has this thing called range. He plays 'characters'.

Daniel Day-Lewis is fucking awesome. Many of the others on that list are very lacking.

Denzel is great, but when has he not played a mildy-sarcastic very-clever selectively-stereotypical black man?

Jack Nicholson? Only good when he plays a psychopath. I suspect he's a psychopath.

Al Pacino? Terrible. Just fucking terrible.

Terrible now maybe, but certainly great back in the day.

Yes, this. Pacino was amazing back in the day.

KT

It may be a generational thing. I never really saw any of his 'classics.'

Which probably why a lot of his generation falls into my 'I don't get it' list. Pacino, DeNiro, Nicholson...they all just seem very typecast, one-note actors. But it's probably because they already gave their 'great' performances and are now largely just working for a paycheck.

It's hard to even come up with who the 'new generation' of greats is...there are some holes to fill. Immediate thoughts: DiCaprio, Damon, Gyllenhaal...shit I'm running out already...Pitt and Clooney are getting a little older, dunno if they'd fall in with the same group...uhh...Gordon-Levitt?

Fuck me, who's make decent movies anymore?

I like the dude a lot, but he's in a tier below some of the heavy hitters in my opinion.

KT

I think he lacks some versatility, but still has more than most. I think most actors play themselves over and over and that makes it more about casting.

Peter Sellers
Willem Dafoe
George C. Scott
Daniel Day Lewis
Elizabeth Taylor
Meryl Streep (still hate her)
Jack Lemon
Walter Matthau
Steven Root (The astounding Steven Root)
William H. Macy
Don Cheadle
Robert Ridgely
Crispin Glover
Michael Parks
Katy Bates

These are actors that can transform themselves into other people before your eyes.

I thought he was great in Django, and I'm surprised Waltz won instead of him. But other than that, I dont think he really had any Oscar winning worthy performances, except maybe for Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. I actually thought he won the Oscar for that, but he was just nominated.

Dont know but i wish they could retroactively give him one for Arny from Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. I saw that before he was famous and thought that he was actually...umm... special.

i think dicaprio is one of the few extremely talented actors out there that can play pretty much any role. don't really care who gets oscars though.

would definitely put him above denzel. denzel is a good actor, but he plays denzel in every movie.

After that first crazy-eyed picture, I thought those were Pacino, lol.

And Re: versatility, that's what I like about DiCaprio. When I think of 'people who play themselves,' I think of, like...Michael Cera. Alec Baldwin. There are a lot of them.

DiCaprio does characters DAMNED well. He's not as total-chameleon as Day Lewis, granted, but not many are.
