When will we see a 1Ghz GPU? And who will do it first?

Two questions just for conversation.

#1. When will we see a 1Ghz GPU?

#2. Who will be the first? ATI? nVidia? An unknown?

I think it will happen within two years, and ATI will be the first.

This is with stock cooling. no phase changes, or water.

I think you can put your bets on the company that's shrinking their process the fastest. So I'm guessing ATi, since they'll need at least 65nm to be able to go for 1GHz on stock.

I am surprised they are at the clock rate they are at today. 1Ghz is believable I guess on smaller process's.

As for who will do it first? Who knows, probably both will be out at nearly the same time since they are both using the same FAB partner.

Finnish Overclockers

That's the only one I know, but that was on LN2, not stock cooling. The OP asked for stock cooling, nothing else. As for the ATi demo, I didn't see it, so I don't know about it. Please link that so we have some reference. Thanks.

Yes I know about the liquid nitrogen thing, that's why I stated "stock cooling". Altho that overclock is very impressive

if nvidia manages 700mhz with the G71, i'd imagine their around 900 with the G81. maybe that'll reach 1ghz Ati wont be far behind tho

I doubt either the g80 or the r600 will reach 1ghz, even on a 65nm process, because the gpu's are always getting more parallel, with more transistors being added with each new revision. It's not like a P3 or an Athlon cpu that basically retained their architecture unchanged from 700mhz to 1ghz. Adding all those extra transistors generates more heat, and higher clocks also generate more heat. Eventually we'll have 1ghz gpu's, but most likely not this year, and maybe not even the year after. And who know which side by that time will take the clock speed approach - it could be either Nv or Ati.

No! Trident! I hear they are making a comeback.

But really, do clockspeeds matter so much when they keep "widening" the pipelines?

No way, Intel will! Extreme Graphics yo!
BTW, I think clock speed would matter in terms of clock cycle latency.

Who cares who gets to 1ghz first. As others say, GPU's today are massively parallel. If nothing else, the AMD vs Intel mhz wars should show that it's not purely raw mhz that determines processing power. More than even CPU's, GPU's will be dependant on efficiency and not raw speed. That's not to say bumping up the mhz won't help.

oh right, um I think it is VERY possible to get a 1GHz gpu right now, just manufacture it with 1 pipeline.

I bet Nvidia, since they seem to be able to get some high speeds on their cards (more so than ATI in some cases)

If it's OCing, I can't tell who will get there first, but as a stock card, i bet Nvidia.

I'm not asking whether it will be a good thing. I'm asking for computing history, kinda like guiness book of world records for computers.
