Karl, who has to put up with Rambus? I own an intel cpu and mobo chipset, and I certainly don't have to deal with Rambus. When I get a P4, I don't necessarily have to buy Rambus. If it's financially resonable, and benefits performance, then I'll consider it.

But none of that makes intel suck. When they first went down the road of requiring Rambus, they were expecting the price of the RAM to be competitive with SDRAM. But, that didn't quite work out as they projected. So they made an error in that regard. Big frickin' deal. They've fixed it, right?

i basically think 3dfx (or we) over-hyped the V5 6000 so much that IF it is cancelled, we will all loose faith in 3dfx forever

i already did lost all my faith
a GTS is in my rig now

Wingznut PEZ -

Hey, if you like Intel shoving crappy memory down your throat that's your opinion. I tend to think the market agrees with me. The fact is that VIA would still be a bit player if Intel had provided customers a choice of what memory to run on their latest and greatest chipset - i820. Eventually Intel released the i815, but it was way too late IMO. You do remember the MTH fiasco, don't you?

I agree with Rahvin - whether or not the V5 6000 is delayed (or cancelled) has no impact from an engineering point of view with when the Rampage will be released. They are two different designs, and they will have different issues. Whether or not there's a corporate/marketing reason for a delay depends. But, IMO, these two projects are independent and if one slips it should have little impact on the other aside from resource and priority allocation.

It doesn't take an MBA to see that the window for the 6000 to be released successfully into the market is closing very quickly. And that the Rampage is likely to make more money overall for the company (product cost should/will be much lower and overall margins should be higher on Rampage cards). I can't see that it would even be a question of whether or not to release Rampage ASAP regardless of what that does to V5 6000 sales.

Karl: I'm not sure that I see your complaint. In the first sentence you say that Intel is forcing a memory standard down the industry's throat. But in the last sentence you remind the reader to remember the MTH fiasco - which was an attempt to allow users a choice of memory to use.

if intel really wanted to force the RAM down our throats they wouldn't have licensed the GTL+ bus spec to VIA and others to make P2/P3/Celeron chipsets, and they wouldn't have quietly forgotten about their lawsuit with VIA over use of said bus spec. they quickly put together a chipset that works well with sdram, the 815, to cover thier asses, and they have distanced themselves from rambus as much as contractually possible.

i'm gonna cast my vote with the side that says v6k ain't comin out, rampage will be announced at comdex (v5 was announced last year at that show) and hopefully for tdfx they can actually market the thing in january.

Ok, but like I said... They were predicting that RAMBUS prices would fall to normal SDRAM prices. But they didn't. So now intel is not "forcing" anything anywhere. No?

And actually, RAMBUS is not "crappy memory." It's just not anywhere close to being worth the price. Had RAMBUS price fallen to $1/meg, I don't think anyone would be complaining.
