System: Windows XP SP2

I was receiving errors in my application log indicating that a Logitech driver could not be installed (part of automatic Logitech updates). After looking at the FAQ for that software it said to edit the properties of 2 registry keys for the Logitech device. They were HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\...\LOGITECH and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...\LOGITECH. The change was to add user "Everyone" with full access. This was supposedly the answer to correct the issue with installing the automatic updates that were failing. Afer making this change I started an Adaware scan and went to bed without ever restarting the system.

During the night I heard my computer go into hibernation...this suprised me a little as I had not ever had it do that before. No biggie I thought, I will just start up again in the morning. Sure enough it resumed Windows and I was right were I was which was the conclusion of the Adaware scan. I looked into a few cookies that were found and fixed the errors. I then unistalled an application called System Doctor using the uninstall method provided by the software (not Add/Remove) as I probably should have. After removing the software it required a reboot.

When my system rebooted I got the x00000074 BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO error. I tried safe mode, last known good config...no dice. Now I appear to be hosed. I guess I'm looking for advice on my next steps. I know the RAM is good (tested successfully). Should I try a repair? If so, do I just replace the registry or do a complete OS reinstall? There is a lot of valuable data on the system. Doesn't XP store registry backups for this reason? Why would a change to the active registry impact the last known good config/registry settings? Thanks!

After all the confusion, it looks like this was a pretty standard registry corruption issue only. I am still not sure if the cause was my meddling or the System Doctor app that I uninstalled but the fix was simply to overwrite with a previous copy of the registry and then once the system booted I was able to perform a restore to a point just prior to the crash. All is well again. I guess since this was the first time I have not been able to boot using any method I got a little panicky!
