When you move, what happens to mail that goes to your old place?

I will hopefully be getting an apartment in the next couple of day, so obviously any mail that goes to my old place (my parents' house) will be given to me by my parents. But what happens when I move out of the apartment, to a house, and some of my mail goes to the apartment? Does the person living there have to give it to me or what?

You need to fill out a form that tells the USPS to forward all mail to the new address.

yup. They will forward your mail to your new address. You can pick one of these forms/packages at any post office (sometimes the apartment complex will have them).

they only forward for a fixed amount of time. its your repsonsibility to make sure your subscriptions and mailing addresses are updated elsewhere

I thought it was six months?

Yup, and more importantly, tell all the people who send you bills your new address.

If you don't know this information, you probably aren't fit to live on your own.

Because the OP didn't have a need to know until know.

I had a PO Box and my old apt. forwarded for a full year. Like I said, it is only up to a year, doesn't mean every place in the US follows this.

Is it free from the USPS?

Canada Post makes you pay for it, how ever long you want in 6 month increments.

It always fun when you moving in a new place and keep getting the mail of the previous tenants, get to see who live there previous to you.

It is free but you have to pay $1 for verification purposes if you do it online.

What should I do if that happens? Do I need to deliver it to that person or what?

Throw it back with forward or return to sender or no longer live here....

When you fill out the form to change your address with the post office they send you a welcome package with coupons including a 10% off Home Depot. I've filled these out before just to get the coupon right before making a large purchase. It's worth $1 if you can save $100.

Just checked Amazon for a Dummies Guide for Moving out on your Own for the First Time. So such luck. Guess the OP will have to check back here at ATOT for guidance and survival tips.

If you don't fill out a forwarding request and submit it to your local PO whoever moves in will get your mail. Forwarding expires in a year AFAIK. More than enough time to notify all your senders of the new address. Forwarding is temporary and IMO a year is way too long. People that don't forward and get a lot of junk mail are ignorant. Of course the PO likes it as it cuts down on their (CFSII) processing.
