When you quest, do you read the quest "dialog"? (With Poll)

Curious, if RPG style games that have the traditional quest system where you see the little "Hey, you, I have a quest!" icon above an NPC's head...

Do you simply run up to the NPC and queue up the quest "click click click" style? Or do you actually take the time to read/listen to the quest dialog? Also, does it depend on the game or environment?

I tend to read the quest dialog. It's an RPG, after all. On the other hand, my brother is more of a hack-n-slash player (not that I couldn't beat him at Quake) and just clicks through it all to get to the puzzle/action. I couldn't read back when they played Quest For Glory, but I wouldn't have been able to read fast enough anyway.

If it's WoW I just use insta text and accept then look at the objective. Now back when EQ was prime time I actually read the text.

Oops, just realized you said RPG, if I'm playing an RPG then yeah I read the text.

I've done Baldurs Gate 2 several times so I know most of the quests, but I read them anyway because the writing in that game is so much better than average.

In other RPG's I read it the first time and then click through all the other times.
Most modern games have good built-in quest logs. They normally drop all the fluff text and just tell you what to do.

Hellgate: London .. click as quickly as possible
-why confuse yourself what the hell it has to do with anything other than another demon slaughter?

Gothic had a real story WORTH reading ... same with NWN ... KotOR ... ... even Fable and Oblivion
- i read the quests

For single player RPG's, if the quests aren't worth reading then the game isn't worth playing.

If it's a MMO, I do not play it for the story, but for the interaction with other players (preferably at the end of my bloody sword/laser).

In SP RPGs, all the time. In MMOs, some times, depends on the quest and how many other people are around the same NPC at the same time.

In single player games I read every tidbit. In MMOs I used to, but in the age of WoW I just click and look at the required objectives.

MMO's? Fuck no. I'd be happy if they'd just boil all the quests down to 3 words: what, how many, where.

Can't vote because you don't have an option similar to "Depends on the quest". I don't read quest text when it's from some random farmer asking me to kill boars. But when some old dude is telling you about why we are attacking xyz fortress, I might pay more attention and get something out of it. I tended to read the quest text in WoW a lot more than Lotro because a lot of it contained puns and jokes that were fun to catch.

I'd read quest text a lot more in EQ though, not because it was funny or particularly interesting, but because you actually had to ask the NPC questions based on what it said to get the quest. Evil setup as most people knew because you couldn't always divine the fucking catch phrase if your life depended on it. But really fun when it was implemented correctly and the conversation just sort of came together. It was also cool because they could hide text until you had talked to another person and learned what you needed to ask from them.

I play WoW, and I read the quest dialog. WoW has an awesome base story line and great side quests that are pretty interesting if you read them and follow the quest to the end. Although some are still just "Kill me 20 boars" but still...

I don't read any quests in WoW anymore. I've done them all plenty.

In LOTRO I do read all of the quests as I feel like they are very well written for the most part. Something like Hellgate I just clicked through because the "story" was stupid.

So I guess it depends on the game.

I don't read them in WoW because I know most quests very well. If I've never done the quest, I'll read the text. I hate it when people ask about a quest because they were too lazy to read the damn text in the log. C'mon, WoW is so user friendly .

Agree with re: Hellgate (yes - pretty much pointless unless you want to be entertained by the funny/crazy stuff Lucius Aldyn and 314 say) is not quite the same as say a Planescape Torment - I think I read almost all if not all of the dang texts. The whole experience with Planescape was like reading a book however so I did not mind reading 'em. Text reading? Depends on the game

Typically I read everything unless I'm doing it for the 3rd or 4th time and already know the quest and what it says.
