I remember when gas was under a dollar per litre. The twin towers were still standing, but I did not even know what they were then. Pretty much the day of 9/11 the prices shot to over a buck and stayed there pretty much since then. They had to update all the display signs as they could not support the extra digit. A lot of stations improvised by taping a cardboard "1". There's been a few odd times where they dipped lower for a few weeks but that's about it.

Here in the states prices vary from state to state depending on whether or not they have a personal income tax. Here in FL we don't so there's an additional road tax embedded in the price of fuel for everyone to pay which I believe is the better solution and spreads the burden across all motorists.

Yep, Florida has no state tax.

The sales tax is higher to take advantage of tourism to a large degree by design.

They could see out the window anyway and I'm certain they were quite used to bicycles...etc running over them. The great thing back then was they would check your oil and top off your wiper fluid and even air up your tires. Many gas stations were also mechanic shops so you were never far from one and rarely had to wait anywhere near as long as you do today and it was actually affordable. Nowadays, going to a mechanic is like going to the hospital for brain surgery.

Full service stations are great. Especially when you're too drunk and don't really want to get out of the car to pump the gas yourself.

I've never seen those air systems before as all of the places I went only had a hose with no gauge on it. Made for some interesting biking experiences and I can't tell you how many times I popped my inner tubes.

We have air pumps that accept CCs.

And those pumps are noisy, oiless compressors. They produce about 1 1/2 SCFM at 45 psi. Three quarters of a "Federal Reserve Note" for 180 seconds of runtime. And the chuck is often in a state of disrepair where you're fidgeting with it so much, leaking and pissing away air you're paying for just to get those rubber balloons filled to sidewall pressure.

The service stations of yesterday let you have use of the hose for free and it was connected to their shop air and there was plenty of flow and the pissing to psi ratio was in your favor. For free!

And now they charge a big premium for nitrogen inflation. A gas that makes up just over three quarters of the air we breathe. Why not use neon or xenon? Just maybe if the car was struck by lightning the red/blue respective flashes may send you to another dimension. Provided you were going 88m/hr.

Here on Oregon there is no self serve. But they don't have those hoses any more. Attendants run your credit card and pump your gas. Some stations will clean your windshield, but most don't. If you tell them you need air they will turn on the pump for free but it's off to the side of the station and you have to move your car and fill your tires yourself.

I live in a part of the country that allows common folk to pump their own gas, without assistance from some pleb.

I will say that here in town we do have several Gate stations that cater to boaters with pure gas at the pumps. They raise the price of the ethanol free stuff making it prohibitively expensive to poor folks like myself. If I were running a high performance engine I'd probably stop by and fill up before messing around with it or going to the track.
