im on windows XP Pro, I did a clean install about a month ago and everything was working fine until now. Whenever I try to do the windows update right when it opens IE it locks up and my comp either BSODs or restarts. I tried just opening up IE to go to my homepage and it loaded part of the page then crashed. Firefox works fine. Any ideas?

Delete the temporary internet files and keep your fingers crossed.

I would redownload IE7 from scratch. A clean install.

I had the same problem recently & it turned out to be bad RAM ... I suggest that if clearing out the cache & temp internet files the problem recurs, you run a memory diagnostic like memtest86 to check it out.

I think I'd install Mozilla Firefox 2.0 & start enjoying a real internet browsing experience

My last IE problem was my last IE problem, I like to say (actually, it's the 1st time I said it but I did like saying it). Firefox FTW.

Firefox ... it is one the best out there ... Opera is nice, if you like it's look & feel
Or Netscape 8.0 on which Firefox is partly based

Go to add/remove programs and see if you have any yahoo or google toolbars installed.. If you do, uninstall them

Or any programs you don't recognise at all, really.

Also he'd do well to download and install AVG Free 7.5, which comes with a trial version of their anti-spyware (after they ate Ewido), which should rid you of any possible nasties.

I used to use I.E 7.0 but the additional security is a pain in the ars so I quickly switched back to Firefox 2.0.

The only real reasons I use IE is for school (some websites require it and wont work in FF) and for getting windows updates. Other than that I would be set with FF. Ill check it out when I get home tonight. Too many papers due to check it

And I doubt its the memory but ill give that a check anyway

I will second the preference for Firefox 2.x ... and as stated if you use the IE Tab extension you wil
have no issues with windows updates
