Howdy,
When's the replacement CPU due for the AMD XP series CPUs?

Just bought the XP 2000+ and have thought of getting the A7V333, but really, we're limited by the 266Mhz FSB, the 333Mhz RAM doesn't offer noticable performance over 266Mhz RAM.

Thanks,

Well, that replacement is due at the end of 2002 or beginning of 2003. The successor to the Athlon XP die is the Thoroughbred which is just a die shrink from .18mm to .13mm. It allows for faster speeds. No architectural changes/enhancements are in it, just a die shrink. May be better for overclocking than the current crop. It will be due in May/June.

The ClawHammer is where it's at. ClawHammer, the workstation/high-end PC will have the capibility of both 64-bit and 32-bit processing power. It will be called the AMD Athlon XP-64. Many (including myself) will be awaiting this beauty. All other PC-Related stuff put off on hold for this one. If it fails, AMD will die. It won't, though, which is good. The SledgeHammer, just named the Opteron, is for server and other data-intensive stuff. Microsoft will be putting in much $$$ for the Hammer series, it's sure to be very revolutioniary! All they need now is some 64-bit programs...

As noted above, it is due out at the end of '02 / beginning of '03. I won't go into the specifics, as the links below provide ample info.

Interesting... on Tom's site, it talks about the bus having 3.2 GB bandwidth... that roughly translates into a 400Mhz DDR FSB.

If so, that means there's not a lot of point in upgrading to a KT266A or KT333 motherboard from my Asus A7V133. When the Hammers arrive, their 400 Mhz FSB and 400 Mhz RAM will clobber the KT266A and KT333 based systems.

Thanks!

The date that's floating around the internet for the Hammer release appears to be October 28; I have seen it several times. I wouldn't be suprised if this date will be the day because the first samples of the Hammer are running extremely stable. So at the end of October, be prepared to see a 3400+, equiv. to a P4 3.4 Ghz. I am guessing that it will run at around 2 -> 2.2 Ghz. Since it's 25% faster than Athlon XP, clock for clock, it will rate really well compared to P4.
