Agreed. 1000$ is fine for a GOOD ultrabook. The problem in recent years is that apple has just been better than ultrabooks in terms of high quality - PC vendors such as dell, HP, etc were just shoving underperforming junk with horrible components and expected us to pay for that. Consumers had none of it. That may be changing. Several excellent designs have been released this year, such as the Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 (*very* nice machine), Sony Tap and the Surface Pro 2 looks excellent as well. In 2012 nothing matched the Apple rMBP. There are now several contenders that have been recently released - I certainly wouldn't hesitate to spend 1000$+ on a quality ultrabook, whereas one year I would only consider the rMBP for that price range.
In fact, the Yoga Pro 2 is now released and it is a heck of machine from what i've seen. It's definitely at the top of my list for consideration - it has a monster resolution of 3200*1800 as well.
