I want to build a few Skylake boxes with 48GB of ram, maybe 64GB. Yes, I can do this with an LGA2011 platform, but it's less performance for +$200 cost. Where in the world are the 16gb unbuffered DDR4 memory modules? Newegg has a few 32gb (2x16gb) kits listed, but they are all out of stock. I could not find any at Amazon. Are these being snapped up by OEMs?

Looks like Newegg now has several 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair kits available. Time to pull the trigger.

Planned build:

i5-6600K
Asrock Z170 Pro4
2x 16gb ddr4 2400
2x 8gb ddr4 2400
2x Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
Antec Sonata III with EarthWatts 500w PSU

Glad you found some. With the release of Skylake there was bound to be a temporary demand spike in DDR4.

2x16 and 2x8? For the sake of symetry, just go for 64 GB.

I don't know why you would want that much, if you're heavily into VMs maybe 32 GB and a Core i7 would be a better choice. But I would seriously consider waiting for Xeons E3 V5 if you need THAT much RAM since ECC becomes more useful the more RAM you have.

I need this to run 5x VMs with about 40gb assigned memory. Hyper-V needs lots of memory to run well, and 48gb provides a good balance of CPU/Mem/Disk for my workload. I considered 64gb of memory, which would fit 7x VMs, but the cpu and disk would need an upgrade as well.

Xeon and ECC memory is not optimal for this use case and budget.

I have not bought yet. Tried to on Friday, but ran into qty limits when ordering 4x of these.

5x VM's not simulataneously right?
Cuz your better off on an i7 as zir states.
The HT on the CPU's will help a lot when handling that many VM's.
