I want to buy a 2405 but am waiting for a Dell coupon to bring the price to below $850 or so. I haven't seen any new coupons on techbargains dot com or anywhere else for a long time. Anyone have any info?

They had a sale on them at the end of October; they probably won't be on sale again until January or so. Usually Dell clears out inventory at the end of each quarter.

2405 that is, and not a coupon.

If you're going to advertise, I'm going to comment...

Will accept a GOOD 2005 FPW toward the purchase of the 2405.

Retail on a 2405 is $1200, retail on a 2005 is $434, but i only want $600 in difference.

I am only interested in a 2005 toward the 2405, I already have a 2001fp I'm trying to sell so not interested in it or anything smaller.

So, you want $400 for your 2001FP, but you'll only give someone else $175 for their 2005FPW...?

Back OT... I wouldn't suggest anyone buying either a Dell 2001FP, 2005FPW, or 2405FPW in the near future unless you get it for a steal or you NEVER watch DVD's on your system. Wait and see what Dell has in store for 2006 that will be compliant with Windows Vista Hardware DRM.

Buying a $1200 monitor like the 2405FPW (even with coupons) that wasn't able to play HD DVD's becasue it didn't support the Vista DRM would suck.

I'm in the same boat with the 2005FPW, I don't watch DVD's on my PC, but it doesn't exactly do wonders for the resale value of my LCD.

What makes you think I'm going to upgrade to Windows Vista? Screw that. I'm going to stick around with XP. Besides, someone is going to come out with a hack to get around that DRM.

At any rate, I want the 2405 for software development, photoshopping, games, and day-to-day browsing... all at the same time!

Off Dell's site
2405 new = $1200
2005 new = $434

Difference $766

Hell look at it this way.

I want $800 for my used 2405, which is 1/3 off(1200-400).

New a 2005 is $434, and can be had from Dell for $350 with coupons. So if we use the same 1/3 off then a used 2405 is worth $288($434-33%).

How is me asking for a 2005 + $500-600 a bad deal?

Not only that, I know mine does not have stuck or dead pixels or backlight issues. Lets see Dell or anyone else w/ a NIB one promise that. That or enjoy the RMA process of having to go through 1-5 units before you find one you can live with.

Because you are looking at a $1200 LCD... Obvioulsy, you like shiny, expensive things...

Aside from the DRM issue, I bet that Vista is going to rock from an end-user perspective. Compare WinXP to WinME. As much as people like to pick on M$, from an enduser perspective, their OS'es have only gotten better over time IMO.

If you look around i know you can get em for $671.44

New, used? Now, that would be the steal I referred to in my earlier post. Show me the way... I've been looking for a good reason to upgrade my wife's CRT to my 2005FPW

DRM? That is going to probably last about 5 minutes into Windows Vista's launch, approximately 2 minutes after Vista's own copyright security (serials and what not) are cracked.

I too would like to know where you are pulling this number from.

$500 + 2005FPW is a bit more acceptable, but I'm still curious as to what w00t has to say.

this doesnt just effect vista. any protect content will require a player that supports the drm. its not MS's fault either. they are just making it work with vista. also, it has nothing to do with current dvd's just the new formats.

anyone with a hdtv that doesnt support hdcp is gonna be screwed. thats every tv that only has component, not digital inputs.

I thought that actually extended to not just digital inputs, but to HDMI inputs specifically. ie. a regular DVI-D input wouldn't support HDCP either, and they are digital.

No

HDCP is actually independant of the type of Digital Input. HDMI inputs almost all have HDCP (although I have seen people claim thier HDMI ports don't support HDCP, I can't find a single example for sale)

HDCP can be done over DVI

but its always a good idea to check and double check HDCP support over DVI since this is rather uncommon (a few LCD-TVs, Gateway 21" Widescreen, Samsung MP models)

Ok, it's been almost a month. Where the heck are the 2405 coupons that will bring this bad boy to under $850??? Dell has it on sale for $899, but I know it can go lower!

Why did you bump a month-old thread to ask this?

It's probably not going under $899 until after the holidays. Like I said, Dell usually clears out inventory at the end of each quarter. Last big sale was at the end of October (for ~$750 + S&H). Next one should be in late January/February.

How much do you all think the price will drop after the 30'' comes out? How about next summer?

The 30" will probably be in a higher price bracket (I'm guessing in the $1599-1899 range, compared to $1199 MSRP for the 2405FPW). There is supposed to be a new 24" widescreen with HDCP coming out ("2407FPW", maybe?); once that is out, you might be able to find 2405FPWs for somewhat less. But it will take a while for prices to drop significantly, since production costs are high (and so is demand).
