foxnews:if it aint white it aint right
msnbc: boring elitist left wing handjobs
yahoo: posting anything and everything but the news
cbs: lame
npr: not enough funding or personnel to do national news justice

so anything out there would be a better fit? i get less of a slant on the john stewart show nowadays

It is sad, yahoo news used to be really good, but is now complete and utter crap.

For good balanced news that has in-depth articles I prefer Christian-Science Monitor (www.csmonitor.com). Don't let the name spook you, they are very non-biased. They do have some of the normal tabloid crap on their home page, but their other articles are really good.

Look into who owns media broadcasting.
Print media.
There you will find their agenda.
In other words, there is no "real" news.
Paris Hilton antics, now THAT is real news.
Or so it would seem....

The sad part is that the US news media no longer even tries to pretend they have news newsworthiness.
You are stupid, gullible, saps, didn't you know....

That certainly explains why you are so consistently disinformed and mindlessly one-sided on every topic. You can't tell the difference between shameless propaganda and news.

Oops. Did you realize you accidentally included a credible news source?

Some of them were posted in jest. I read almost everything out there, then run it through my own sifter.

If you're looking for a specific story or event, I suggest Google. Use it to find sources close to the story, e.g., local papers, and supplement as needed with credible national or international sources. Whenever I can, I'll go to the original source, e.g., the actual report or study or poll. For a general look at current events, I skim news aggregators and run broadcast network stuff in the background, then turn to Google when I spot something interesting.

I gave up on CNN a long time ago. They are almost a news parody now, focusing mostly on celebrities. gratuitous controversy, and, as you said, tabloid tripe. I'll switch to them occasionally for breaking news, but I can only tolerate them in small doses.

What about Al Jazeera?

i like al jazeera...they are at least blunt. but since it is foreign, they tend to have a outside looking in perspective and cannonly focus on the huge issues.

they do however offer a refreshing take as someone with no skin in the game.

i like bbc for that reason as well. bbc in general is fucking awesome.

I've been playing 'Dodge the Mandela coverage' in an attempt to find out if anything else has been going on in the world in the last week and I've noticed that fox news has the slowest news ticker. I think it might be because their watchers 'can't read so good'

Of course CNN's has the same story broken up into 3 different strings with just slightly different information so apparently their watchers have the memory of a goldfish

Your best bet is to read about the same issue from multiple sources with differing points of view.

Anyone who says one major news source is credible over another is simply overlooking the bias/journalistic incompetence of their preferred outlets (and they all suffer from this to startling degrees).

The Lehrer Newshour is pretty clearly the best resource in terms of broadcast news, and has been for decades. It is the only source that doesn't dumb the news down into soundbites, and treats its subjects with due care and objectivity.

Russian Propaganda: RT

Pretty bad : MSNBC, CNN (MSNBC and CNN seem to be competing for most deficient at the moment.)

Meh: FOX, CBS, NBC (FOX has improved recently, moving it up to Meh in my opinion.)

Pretty good: ABC, PBS, Aljazeera (So far I am impressed with Aljazeera, time will tell though.)

Best for the lols: Colbert Report (vastly superior to The Daily Show imo)

The only answer is to watch them all, identify bias and not trust any of them overly much.
