I'm looking to buy two hard drives in the 2-8 gb range. Does anyone know of a good place for me to get them? I would prefer them to be unused.

Thanks,

-MidiGuy

P.S. Sorry if this post is off topic, as it's not really about current technolegy. I didn't see a hard drive forum.

I don't think they make IDE drives this small anymore. I know that Seagate makes SCSI drives this small, but you're not looking for SCSI are you?

Finding IDE drives this small and new might pose a challenge. I'm sure that others will offer better advice than I. Good luck.

Guess I have to ask, why do you want a small capacity HD? Is it price?

The reason you dont see them "new" anymore is because its cost prohibative to manufacture them. It cost the HD manufacturer about the same to manufacture a 20 Gig drive as a 8 Gig drive, as such, the maufacturer cant sell a 8 gig any cheaper than a 20 Gig, and who would buy a 8 Gig for the same price as a 20 Gig?

Look around at some mom and pop computer shops, you might find some on clearance (just to get rid of them).

"Brand new" ones are on egay...but they end up going up to 60 at least...geez...might as well get a 20-30gb...Fry's had a Fujitsu 10GB...for $79...and 10.2GB 7200rpm Quantums for $85...although Quantum is now Maxtor...so i dunno if they're still available.

You're trying to buy small capacity HD because your BIOS can't recognize more than 8GB? Or like what Helznicht said, is it money issue?

But it's hard to find those now, the smallest that's still floating around is 10GB.

the smaller new ide drives are often laptop format...and thus super-slow, but super-small and relatively quiet (though desktops have quieter seeks at times)...

again, why??

The last computer show I went to, the smallest drive I could find was 20GB. I saw a couple of isolated 15GB's but there were slow and usually just 1 drive (I needed 3 for raid).

Well, I want to pay as little as I can to get a replacement drive for my 486 and one for my friend's Pentium 2. I won't need all that much space on my 486, maybe 3 or 4 gigs if that much, and I don't think my friend needs a whole lot more than the 3 gigs that he had, but maybe a little. There's also the bios issue on my 486 at least. I figure the Pentium 2 will be ok, but I still want to get whatever is cheapest since lots of space isn't crucial.

Yeah it sucks having to buy more than you need. But a HD is something you can take with you to a new system when you upgrade.

Thanks for all your input! I just found out that my friend wants more capacity. But I saw a 2.5 gig drive for $40 dollars on computergeeks.com that might do the trick for my 486. It's used, though, and I don't think it's refurbished, so it might be close to the end of it's life itself for all I know.
