Where can you buy basic logic components?

Sorry if this does not fit in this forum, but I thought you guys would know the best answer.

I want to fiddle with some basic logic circuits so I need to know if I can actually go out and buy AND gates or MUXs and Flip Flops? I had an assignment where we had to design a basic motion sensor alarm system and I have always wanted to try and create it out of hardware. I have some old 386 and 286 mobos that I can pull parts off of too. Is there any way I can find behavioral descriptions of what some of those parts do?

Some of the ICs on these boards have 16 bits connecting them so I am not sure how complex they are. Could they be a chip which has several AND gates on it perhaps?

WOW! I am assuming the TI web page will have the behavioral descriptions of all these components or is there a way to get what they are from the numbers?

I learned HC11 for the Motorola 68K... during that time I though it would be interesting to implements some of this stuff and it looks this place has those chips! More stuff to suck up my time

you should be able to get data sheets for most chips (all you need are the numbers on the chip)

as far as buying, you can get a lot of stuff from those companies for free. just look around the sites and you should be able to get hooked up. i saved about 75 duckets on my senior design project by getting free samples. Bonus: I ordered free samples from TI, got them the next day, less than 20 hours after ordering

I have often used the ECG catalog to find info on all sorts of semiconductors. You could pick one up at your local electronics outlet. (NOT Radio Shack!)
