Where Did BeOS Go?

i used it back in the day, started to look for it<i need a new os in the studio> and i find it nowhere? did Be inc. go under? did they change their lic.?

Just as what has already been posted regarding BeOs well Be Inc. did basically fold, they sold everything to Palm Inc, and from what I have seen on the BeOs forums and sites I go to and from the responses from Palm regarding continued development of Be they are pretty much shelving it. Be was the best OS ever IMO and here's a topic I started with a link to a great demo movie released that is worth watching if you can DL a 200mb file. topic There's still hope for Be as there are actually a lot of "newer" versions that have been released, like Dano and the Developers edition, also there has been quite a bit of work on the new OpenBeOs or OBOS, which looks promising and is what I am waiting for. I loved Beos as well . I wished their had been more support from the hardware manufacturers . Maybe the OpenBeos project will continue the excellent work that Be did !

The question that i have is, how do you get Open BeOS to run... *can* it be run? I would love to try this thing out if it's just mature enough to be tested...

I don't understand the point behind the OpenBeOS project. Since they're going to have to start from scratch, why recreate the BeOS? It didn't have that much software support. If they're willing to create an Open Source OS from scratch, why not make something totally new and better than the BeOS? They could take some ideas from what the BeOS did well and combine it with the good features from other operating systems.

Open BeOs is still for the most part in the pre-alpha stages.

The goal of OpenBeOS R1 is to be source- and binary-compatible with BeOS R5, which was and is in a lot of opinions the best OS out there.

We have, we are, and we will.

We have. Anything finished as of your reading of this is open source. That is better for the community because they can be assured that it will never "focus shift" or go away on them.

We are. Much of the code being written today is being written with an eye toward the future. Networking is in the kernel. All of the bad design decision legacy from pre-R5 is gone. We are implementing the pinnacle of Be's (released) design ideas.

We will. R1 will be the first OpenBeOS release. We have many great ideas (and welcome yours on the GE list) for R2 and beyond. The best is yet to come.

I installed BeOS personal edition the other day but I can't even use it because it doesn't support my ethernet Card (linksys lne100tx ver 4), it only supports up to version 3 of the card. And its black and white on my Geforce2 GTS, after watching the demo video I really wanted to try it out but I guess thats not gonna happen
