>>This might be better in networking, but I'll take a stab.<<
Sorry, the networking forum always seems kind of desolate.
>>I regiestered my domain, centraldogma.org at register.com. The have a great set of domian hosting tools for the domain admin. Plus, they'll do the DNS for free.<<
I thought the $19 was kind of steep. What do you mean hosting tools? how much does their hosting cost?
>>The way domain hosting works:
1. You register a domain.<<
Before getting hosting? Like parking a domain?
>>2. You tell the DNS servers (whether through your ISP, registration site, or personal server) what IPs coorespond to each system (eg. www, mail, ftp, etc). This takes 24-48 hours to trickle to the master servers (.org, .edu., com, etc)<<
Where do these IPs come from? And what do you mean by "tell the DNS servers"?
>>3. Somewhere in your personal web/mail servers, you set up the correct IP and respond names. Such as my webserver responds to
www.centraldogma.org and my mailserver responds to centraldogma.org and mail.centraldogma.org.<<
What personal web/mail servers? I don't think I need mail.
>>Does this make sense? If not, I'll try to clarify.<<
Some of it makes sense, maybe you could clarify a tad. I am new to this. Thanks for responding though, I don't want my domain stolen because I can't figure out how to register it, lol.
