Where do I obtain an IP address for a site that I will
host myself? I want to host a few of my sites but I
am not sure where to call/contact to get my IP address.
Can anyone help me with this? I am new to hosting

You need to obtain an ISP. typically, your ISP will be able to offer co-location services or they will have space on their systems for you to host web sites. Most ISP's also offer Domain hosting and DNS hosting. If you wanted to use a domain name like www.valicon.com, you'd register this domain name with a company that proivdes domain name registration and provide them with info about your ISP.

Some ISP's allow you to use your own machines at home, but not all.

You need to talk to your ISP and find out what services they offer.

You can't just BUY an ip or something, b/c router tables would need to updated and stuff like that so that people could actually REACH your ip, that's why your ISP has to do it. Here is some info anyways: www.arin.net.

Well, if you're connected to the internet, you already HAVE an IP address. If you're running Windows 95/98, do a Start->Run->winipcfg. What you need is a domain name, and a DNS service. DNS converts names to IP addresses (and vice-versa). If you registered with register.com they provide this service for free. If you registered with someone else, check out www.tzo.com.

Now, i dont want to come across as the a** hole here, but this is why there is no value in the comptia and microsoft certifications any more. If an MCP and Network+ certified person is asking these questions, that just ruined all respect i have for those certs. (and i have both, among others)

An MCP just mean you've passed a test on a specific MS product. Nothing else.

As far as I know, A+ is just an entry level certification on an overview of general computer technology.

Goldboyd:

Now it's idiots like you who make the forums an unpleasant place.
here I am asking a simple question as I have never hosted my own
sites but I do have a few commercial sites of my own hosted by
a hosting company. I am very skilled on the NT platform, in
DHCP, WINS, TCP/IP and such. All I wanted to know is there any
where else I can obtain an IP address from other that an ISP.
Does that make my certs 'worthless'? I, unlike you, don't
profess to know everything.

Do you your kicks out of being condescending? I feel sorry for
you that you must act in such a way.

valicon,
If you have dial up then you will need to use a redirector service, if you have Cable or DSL then you need to find out if you get your IP's dynamically or is it static, did you set up your internet connection? If it is Dynamic then you will need to usae the redirect service, if it is static then you will have to contact your ISP and see if you have authority over the IN_addr.arpa record.

Now about certs and the like, I agree on both sides, I am MCSE but I don't know everything, but this is a really simple question and it would worry me to have to work with people without enough experiance or knowledge to answer some of thses types of questions. On the other side of that coin, I don't think that getting all over somebody about it like what was done is right, if you have an opinion about certs start a OT thread and rant away, its not so cool to put another person down for being at a level of experiance we all once where. Just a suggestion.

Shuxclams,

Thanks for the input, but as far as configuring, static and dynamic
IP addresses, DHCP and all that, I am fine with, I have been working with them for sometime. My question is rather than getting an IP
address from an ISP, was there an additional source, such as internic
who would provide an IP address. Thats all I wanted to know.

No, only an ISP has IP address's unless you want to have it hosted, then a hosting co. would have the IP. What is it that you intend on doing? Are you going to host from home? I think I understand what you are saying. You want to buy, or what have you, a full class C IP address that you own. (?) For that I am unsure, I will ask around on that though.
