was attacked by a large dog. I had to kick it in the face multiple times to get it to leave me alone and suffered some bad bites. The dog had to be captured and put down as the owner couldn't be found. If I had my pistol on me at the time. I would not of been bitten nearly as much and the police/animal control wouldn't of had to spend their time hunting for a dog to make sure I didn't have rabies.
You could get dog spray or something and although it's as much as a hassle to carry as a small gun you will GUARANTEED have less hassle by cops or anybody else if you use it.

The police are not going to care. I have a permit and I have the right to defend myself. The owners might care, but that's not my problem. In the case I described above, no owner was found and the dog was put to death. The difference is I took several bites before he was put to death.

I'm not going to carry pepper spray. It's hard to aim, not always effective, and if the wind blows right can give you a horrible day. Bullets on the other hand are easy to use, go where I point them, are effective, and are not going to blow back into my eyes if the wind shifts.

I've had animals my entire life. I've never had one escape and go on the attack. If you can't control your animals I don't really feel sorry for you. I also live in an area with wolves, coyotes, and there was even a bobcat sighting last year. You want to test that pepper spray on a pack of wolves? I'd rather have the bullets and the loud noise to scary off the rest.

braggin' rights...feeling hard.

I am like with ATOT and how they seem so scared of everything yet can rattle off specs on tazers, chemical deterrants and guns.

It's time to move if you have to pack jogging around your neighborhood.

And of course, anyone who wants to can just move.

I can easily get the 140k I owe on my home that I bought when prices were high now that the market lists my home at 100k. I have no problem just getting a new job some place away from here that pay as well as my job.

It's childs play right?

If you need to carry a gun while jogging, you're jogging through the wrong neighborhood. I only bring a cell phone, water, and my car keys.

Yeah, because acts of violence only occur in the bad parts of town and carrying a gun takes sooooo much time and effort.

It's all a matter of risk vs. return. Your chances of getting mugged/killed/etc. may be low where you run, but the value you place on your life is high (presumably). So, the question you (and everyone else) must ask is whether or not the amount of effort it takes to carry a gun (or other weapon) is lower than the potential risk. And, of course, everyone will have a different threshold by which they will make their decision. Every day we all make decisions about how much risk we are willing to accept when it comes to protecting our own life. I don't think taking 2 seconds before a run to holster a gun is that much effort, regardless if I'm in the good or bad part of town, but that's just me.

Think of the recent articles about how a pizza delivery saved a kidnapped woman from who knows what.

Since the people were from Atlanta, I've heard the follow-up reports to that story.

Every single piece of evidence that's been reported after the initial story says that they were having an affair, that she had other opportunities to escape (left alone in the car at a gas station when the dude went into pay) on the way there and made absolutely no effort to get help, and that this was most likely something that they had planned beforehand (some kind of bondage fantasy). Last I heard, the authorities in TN had decided to not press charges.

I think it's safe to say you can scratch that one off your paranoia list

In the entire 12 years I've been running, I've been attacked by 2 small dogs (kicked them out of the way) and had a couple larger ones jump up on me after I slowed up. I pushed them off me and the owners quickly put them back on a leash. I've never been threatened by a human.

Being struck by a car is a much more likely incident that I watch out for.

Well as my police officer friends will tell you, they are not being paid to protect you. They are paid to arrest criminals and if they feel like it, help you. If you want protection, it is up to you to provide it. If you can't afford to live someplace where you don't need protection, then what are you going to do? Run back in forth in your apartment and hope it doesn't get robbed?

Never used one but am going to buy one and try it out. Reviews are decent.

I have one. It works great, but I'm not sure how well it'd work while jogging.

Can't be everywhere at once. Think about it for a minute.

Not to mention the police have no obligation to protect you.

That's what the Supreme Court says, anyway...

Bento box?

I've never carried a gun when cycling despite many thousands of miles and a few century rides.

I am so scared of the world that I actually never leave my house without my tank and my bear-dogs to protect me.

I'm not sure what fear has to do with this discussion.

Is one afraid of fire because he/she owns a fire extinguisher?

If one straps the fire extinguisher to themselves while jogging, yes.
