Where do you draw the line between punk and rock?

In your opinion, what draws the clear line between the punk and rock music of today? What are the major differences? At what point do you say a band has sold out? And lastly, what punk bands do you despise most, and love most? Do you listen to it for talent involved, or for other reasons?

whats so bad about 'selling out'

just becuase a band starts making money and gets signed by a major label-- that doesnt mean the music has changed... it just means they're trying to make a living

Where did I say that's bad? I just mentioned it to see what some peoples' opinions were on the matter. And, lots of people seem to hate bands after they've sold out.. But it IS true that some bands do tend to get cruddy after selling out (hello blink 182!).

If the group has dyed their hair, has no musical talent, and is complaining about how everybody wants them to conform to society that is punk. And it is bad.

a lot of people think its bad to sell out though... i think a lot of bands get better though-- Look at green day- all they're best stuff is post-selling out.

and i have no idea where to draw the line between punk and rock- i'd say its more in the attitude of the music than anything else.

Heh, well if I listened to more maybe I'd agree. Unfortunately whatever I've heard on the radio has not whetted my appetite. This song is now going through my head:

"I don't wanna change my mind, become another casualty of society. Don't wanna fall in line, become another victim of your conformity." The sad thing is that whoever wrote that drivel actually thought it sounded good and apparently enough people agree that it is constantly played on the radio. It has the same lyrics as a million other songs by people catering to the teenage rebel-without-a-cause crowd.

That's not a punk rock song. It's a song by a bunch of lame weenies.

here's some really good lyrics to a really good punk song... a good example of "political punk":

american Jesus Lyrics
(word/music by greg Graffin, Mr Brett)

i don't need to be a global citizen
because i'm blessed by nationality
i'm member of a growing populace
we enforce our popularity
there are things that
seem to pull us under
and there are things
that drag us down
but there's a power
and a vital presence
thats lurking all around
we've got the
see him on the interstate
we've got the
he helped build the
president's estate
i feel sorry
for the earth's population
'cuz so few
live in the U.S.A.
at least the foreigners
can copy our morality
they can visit but they cannot stay
only precious few
can garner the prosperity
it makes us walk
with renewed confidence
we've got a place to go when we die
and the architect resides right here
we've got the
overwhelming millions every day
(exercising his authority)
he's the farmers barren fields
the force the army wields
the expession in the faces
of the starving children
the power of the man
he's the fuel that drives the clan
he's the motive and conscience
of the murderer
he's the preacher on t.v.
the false sincerity
the form letter that's written
by the big computers
he's the nuclear bombs
and the kids with no moms
and i'm fearful that
he's inside me

<< I thought punk was a type of rock.

*shrug*
>>

Well, I guess I'll put my opinion in already. I always pictured punk as rock with a faster beat, elevated vocals (like generally crazier), etc. I guess a comparison I would make is, "When I Come Around" by Green Day would be labelled rock while "May 16" by Lagwagon I'd call more along the lines of punk.

I guess I look at it like the whole chicken, hen, rooster thing.

You have a rooster and a hen, but they are all chickens.

You have punk, metal, classic, alternative, indie, pop, etc., but they are all forms of Rock n' Roll.

IMO a band doesn't sell out until it actually changes it's music to what the label wants their music to sound like.
