Where do you plug in the 3 pin connector for the Power LED on a motherboard that has no 3 pin spot?

Hi all,

Since this is the motherboard forum maybe someone can tell me.........

Most ATX cases I've seen has the Power ON LED plug in
and it's a connector that is 3 pins. There is a wire on each
edge but nothing in the middle.

I've run into several new motherboards lately that don't have a place
where you can plug this 3 pin connector onto. I'm speaking of where the
power switch and HDD LED and reset buttons plug in.

How does a guy make the green power LED on the case shine when
there isn't a place for it on the motherboard?

Thanks,
Jim

Lots of mobos these days have two sets of pins where you can connect the Power LED. One has the pins next to each other and the other is in the 3-pin arrangement. If not, you can shift the contacts around in the shell. Note the little plastic flaps right near the metal that shows thru the opening. Just gently lift the flap with a small knife and slide the contact out. Then plug it back into the position you want.

7 to go!

What motherboard all have the spot I've seen. Maybe they have it labeled as something else.

I've had a similar problem myself while building my parent's pc using a ecs k752A board. I did find ways to do it from some search engines but it involved removing wires and what not so I just left the power led unhooked since it didn't really bother anyone. I'm not sure what board you are using, but it sounds similar.

Tonight it was an ECS board.....I ended up plugging it into a 3 pin fan header......but
I see what you are saying about pulling the wires out of the connector and putting them
along side one another.

Thanks,
Jim

That's all that needs to be done. Just be sure to move the correct pin to the middle slot. Otherwise you'll have to do it over.

You can also cut the 3 pin connector down the middle with some scissors,it`ll then be two seperate leads(be careful when cutting)that`s what I did with my old PC case that had a 3 pin connector when I connected it to my 2 pin power LED on my ECS board.

It does not matter what pin you move.

ECS does have theirs setup as 2 pin next to each other instead of the 3pin with the middle empty. Checked out their mb manual.

True.......I think splitting the plastic connector is a good ideal.
I'll try that.

Thanks,

Depending on the arrangement of your front panel header, it could make a difference which pin is in the middle. Check for which side of the Power LED pins has an adjacent pin that will remain unused and locate the contacts accordingly. Obviously if the pins on both sides of the two PLED pins will be occupado, you will have to split the shell as was mentioned above.

And, BTW, jyates, the fan connectors are 12V while the PLED pins are 5V - possible to burn out your LED - and the outside pins are Sensor and Ground, NOT volt source and ground, I'd be surprised if it worked...

As Zepper ^ said, it does make a difference - if you don't have clearence on one side or the other.

I also recommend just cutting the 3 pin connector down the middle and then you will have two separate leads so it will be easy to use on any motherboard. I have done this on several cases and it takes little pressure with a knife to cut the connector.

I was at Frys yesterday. They had the 3pin connector to 2 pin connector adapter. It was a male connector on teh 3 side, and female on the 2 side.
