It's very hard to judge who's the "best" of all time is. As many people in this topic have stated, tennis has changed over the years, and to pit the best players of their respective time against each other is kind of unfair because the rules, technology, and the game itself has evolved. Now Sampras owns the record for the most grand slam titles at 14 I believe, which is an unbelieveable feat and one that places Sampras as the greatest in many people's minds. However, one could also argue that the "greatest" player should be most competent on all playing surfaces. Sampras owned the grass courts of Wimbledon in his heyday in the 90s, but he never won a championship on the clay of Roland Garros, which tarnishes the image of Sampras in some people's mind as the greatest. Now Agassi on the other hand has a career grand slam, winning all four grand slams over his lifetime, which is also a feat that hasn't been duplicated since his wife Steffi won all grand slam titles in 1988. In any case, it's been amazing to see Agassi keep his career going at the "old" age of 33 again the young gunners that are out there, and I'm sure he will always noted by many as one of the great players to play.

hello did you even read your post?
i think i need to quote you again.

his lack of power (forehand) and height (serve) is what kept him from being the best. the only thing he had was a good backhand, and decent speed.

I rank him up just about as high as it gets. He's been aroudn forever, has won tons of things and is still going. He'sjust an awesome guy and a great tennis player.

I remember watching hsi first win in Wimbledon when he had the long hair and baseball cap and everything. He was such the rebel back then....

He's one of the few people I will actuayl watch play tennis on TV.

it doesn't matter about who won more championships, Agassi is equal if not better to Pete Sampras. Like someone said before Agassi is STILL playing and he is just as competetive now as he was before.

I do not believe Agassi is equal to pete...look at their matchup it's like 20-13 or something like that, and how many of those were clutch matches for a grand slam. I will say Agassi and Sampras matches have been some of the best tennis I've ever watched though. As somoene said, Agassi is definitely hall of famer material, and he's definitely top 5 ever...he may have had his lapses, but I think his accomplishments and his ranking at this age proves he's one of the top players ever...I think his rededication alone should be reason enough to put him in all time greats.

Agassi has the best groundstrokes & return of serve in the game, period...that's why he's on top, he can still (at his age) dictate play with his groundstrokes, watch an Agassi match sometime, it's him running people around, not the other way around. One of the few people who could outhit Andre, probably the only person right now is Federer. When he's on top of his game in my opinion he could beat anyone quite handily.

With that being said...Pete dominated the game, there will most likely never be another like him.

I think it'd be funny if the kid was terrible at tennis, but awesome at some other sport.

but none the less pretty damn good genes. I mean if you look at the people who produced venus and serena williams...

on Mike and the Mad Dog a WFAN Sports Talk show in the NY area, they were saying that John McEnroe WAY WAY better than Andre Agassi.

now, on their BEST day I'd day Johnny Mac also. this guy was as talented as they come, but his career was pretty much over after 23. Andre has done it longer.

that's kind of like the Jimmy Connors Johnny Mac debate. Connors was #1 BEFORE Mac attack and #1 After, but during McEnroes Peak Years, Connors couldn't beat him, so who is the better player?

I don't care what he is ranked, now that Sampras retired, he is the only one I mind watching in tennis. Actually the only reason why I still watch tennis .

That Dent guy was doing pretty good, especially since he had a banged up leg. The only thing I don't like though is how tennis has pretty much 'evolved' into a serve/volley game and he was just another example of it from what I could tell. The taller players and technology in the rackets now means pretty much every major player has the capability to put up amazingly fast first serves and there's very few people in the game capable of returning them (with any chance of putting themselves in a position to win the point consistently anyway.) That's why I like Agassi so much. He actually has a well-rounded game since he can't rely on his serve to simply overpower people like most other players today do. He's an amazing returner and his baseline play is a joy to watch IMO as most players today aren't as strong on a long baseline rally due to the heavy serve/volley focus of today's game.

sampras>>>agassi simply b/c bridgette wilson>>>steffi graf.

that plus sampras is my fav player of all time. but honestly... there would be no doubt in anyone's mind that if sampras won 1 french open, everyone would say he is the greatest player of all time.

I rank him high.

He is a very good player. Won all 4 Grand Slam's. Consistent and very good to watch.

As for Sampras he is also ranked high. Very dominant on everything but Clay. I suppose his game isn't so hot on Clay but he sure as hell is on fire on grass! So it is a bit of a mix up. Like most Spaniards. Hot on Clay and not so hot on grass. Just a slightly different type of game.
